JT's 2012 List

My favourite releases of 2012.
1Beardfish
The Void

Probably the band's best album to date. Beardfish add an extra dose of metal to their sound and create one of the best prog
albums of the decade so
far.
2Rush
Clockwork Angels

Arguably Rush's best album since the 80's, Clockwork Angels more than lived up to expectations. Headlong Flight, The Garden and
the title track are
some of the band's best songs since their classic era (70's/early 80's)
3Squackett
A Life Within A Day

Excellent collaboration album by Yes bassist Chris Squire and ex-Genesis guitarist Steve Hackett. Despite being a lot less proggy
than many would
have expected, this album features some excellent songwriting and musicianship, particularly from Hackett.
4Ian Anderson
Thick as a Brick 2

Great sequel which, although nowhere near as good as the original TAAB, stands as possibly the best Tull/Anderson release since
1994's Roots to
Branches.
5Storm Corrosion
Storm Corrosion

An opinion dividing collaboration that, despite not fully living up to my expectations,
has some truly outstanding moments such as the beautiful title track and the haunting Drag Ropes.
6Greenleaf
Nest of Vipers

One of the best stoner rock albums of the year. Thanks Greg.
7Mangoo
Neverland

Excellent blend of catchy stoner rock and prog influnces.
8Black Bombaim
Titans

Brilliant heavy psych album. For fans of Earthless.
9Colour Haze
She Said

Great double album from one of the best heavy psych bands around at the moment.
10Anglagard
Viljans Oga

Excellent instrumental symphonic prog album. One of the best prog releases of the year.
11Mirrorring
Foreign Body

Wasn't expecting to like this quite as much as I did given that I'm not huge fan of Grouper but this is an excellent
ambient/psychedelic folk album.
12Orange Goblin
A Eulogy For the Damned

Orange Goblin prove that they are still as good as anyone when it comes to creating sludgy stoner rock/metal.
13Ancestors
In Dreams and Time

Great mix of psychedelic rock and doom metal.
14Crippled Black Phoenix
(Mankind) The Crafty Ape

Really good post rock meets retro prog album with a strong Pink Floyd influence.
15Holy Mountain
Earth Measures

Excellent debut from a very promising new stoner metal band.
16 Pond (AU)
Beard, Wives, Denim

Catchy psychedelic rock reminiscent of classic psych of the late 60's.
17Lord Fowl
Moon Queen

Hard rocking, hook-laden stoner rock.
18Kadavar (DE)
Kadavar

Another great stoner rock album that unfortunately seems to have slipped under the radar.
19Gary Moore
Blues For Jimi

Few, if any, guitarists could cover Jimi's songs as well as Moore does here. A phenomenal tribute from one guitar legend to another.
20Hail Spirit Noir
Pneuma

Very interesting mix of black metal and classic prog/psych.
21Witxes
Sorcery/Geography

Excellent ambient album. Available for free download from bandcamp.
22Venn Rain
Diamond Dust

Beautifully transcendent ambient.
23 Ulver
Childhood's End

Ulver cover classic 60's psych tracks to great effect, making them their own but still staying true to the originals.
24Orcas
Orcas

Great ambient/dream pop collaboration featuring Benoit Pioulard and Rafael Anton Irisarri.
25 T'ien Lai and Stara Rzeka
Tron

Great drone/ambient split.
26Venn Rain
Cymatic Cymbols

Not quite Diamond Dust level but still amazing.
27Gimu
A Silent Stroll On Sombre St

Really good ambient/drone release with an atmosphere that reflects the album's title.
28Trvth
Alpha

Very interesting prog album from Sputnik's very own CaptainDooRight.
29Hidden Orchestra
Archipelago

As good if not better than Night Walks. Great jazzy trip-hop album.
30Weh
En natt kom doed

Great wintry neo-folk album.
31Vice Versa
Rehearsal Tapes

Lo-fi heavy psych.
32Naam
The Ballad of the Starchild

Fantastic EP from a criminally overlooked psych/stoner rock band.
33Agalloch
Faustian Echoes

Not quite as good as I'd hoped but a solid EP with some really good moments.
34Anasazi
Attic Noise

Good death rock EP with some great guitar playing. Thanks Riff.
35Witxes
Winter Light Burns

Didn't like this quite as much as their full length but this is still some really good ambient.
