I also tread into 'old man' territory with murder mysteries of Holmes, Agatha or any sleuth.
Horrorwise, I like the Penumbra series, Amnesia: The Dark Descent... my latest obsession is Slender, though. Based off Slender Man myths. Perfect for making you paranoid and jumpy at 3am. Not really a series but... bahbahbah. |

I liked how they were extensions of the characters neuroses. It kept it fresh every couple of hours, as opposed to the tedious, non-descript tower in P3.
But yeah, I prefer the overt silliness of 4. P3 took itself way too seriously. If character growth equals going from gloomy to brooding to maudlin to downcast to indifferent, then count me out. |

tartarus is not tedious. you do basically the same amount of dungeon hoofin' in both games except in P4 the floors take forever and you never know if you're strong enough for the main bosses, where as in 3 you can wage yourself strong enough for the boss if you make it to your deadline. also tartarus isn't nearly as "bland" and "repetitive" as everyone says
as for the tone of the game that is a matter of preference, but P3 was far from "too serious". at least I could take the game seriously, unlike 4's over-the-top goofiness. it's shin megami tensei for christsakes, of course it's gloomy. also maudlin =/= emotionally driven; by the end of P4 I could care less about the people I was leaving behind, whereas 3 had a bittersweet finale.
anyway make no mistake I love both games a lot and I play both frequently, I am no P4 hater by any means. /rant |

yeah i know it's supposed to be more of an old school SMT game. don't get me wrong, i like the game a lot, i'm just saying that it's a lot more of a "tedious" dungeon crawler than the persona games, which are influenced a lot by dating sims and visual novels. i prefer the persona sub-series, but i've enjoyed every SMT game i've played. my biggest complaint about SJ is that there are only like 5 characters worth caring about, max. the rest don't even have character portraits, it's kind of ridiculous. |
