My Top Kanye Songs
this was a tough one, because he's produced so many songs for
other artists that i just wanna throw on this list, but i'm gonna just
limit it to songs that are on his own studio albums. unless otherwise
noted, each was produced by kanye alone or co-produced with
others. and i didn't count watch the throne. |
25 | Kanye West Drive Slow
the first time i heard this, i was like "OH SHIT, HE SAMPLED 'NO ONE'S
ILLER!" but then i realized that shit was sampled too, but w/e it's still a
tight song. |
24 | My Way Home
probably the oddest choice on here, and i know the biggest aspect of this
song is the sample, but i'd be remiss to have not included it. |
23 | All of the Lights
i'm actually a bigger fan of the short interlude, but he song's got plenty of
merit, as well. |
22 | The Glory
i truly don't give a fuck if kanye wants to flaunt his ego (i.e. this track). he
can do whatever he wants, the guy's a genius. |
21 | Diamonds from Sierra Leone
the one w/o jay-z. |
20 | Jesus Walks
at first (just like with "never let me down"), the lyrical content annoyed me
to the point of me turning this song away, but over time i've at least come
to respect the beat. |
19 | Family Business
pretty much the only song on my copy of the college dropout that skips. fuck. |
18 | Blame Game
also could've been higher, but no matter how many times i think i can get
over it, the retarded, 2-minute "pussy town" chris rock phone call just ruins
the rest of the song. |
17 | Bring Me Down |
16 | Lost in the World / Who Will Survive in America
the tribal-sounding drums and chants towards the end sound like a
stampede of badassery. |
15 | Gold Digger
kinda like with all falls down (not on this list, but almost made it), kanye
elected to hire someone to re-recorded, although other snippets of the
original make an appearance. probably his first HUGE song. |
14 | So Appalled
man this track is fuckin' ridickalus. |
13 | Roses
easily one of mr. west's saddest songs. |
12 | Slow Jamz
couldn't believe the original sample (much like with jay-z's "this can't be
life") was a guy. |
11 | Gone
such a genius and dramatic string progression. |
10 | Everything I Am
the delay on the second half of the "yeah baby" sample towards the end
almost always sends shivers down my spine. |
9 | Power
used to be much higher on my list, but has worn off a bit (perhaps from
over-playing). still easily on of kanye's more complex songs. i mean there's
a solid 4 or 5 different samples he used to put this one together. |
8 | Bad News
much like "say you will," this mainly-instrumental is an overlooked gem. the
string progression is very sophisticated, and as far as the autotune goes, i
really don't give much of a shit if kanye isn't the greatest singer out there.
he knows it too, and that's why he uses autotune to craft his voice into the
sounds he envisions in his head. the melodies in this song are fantastic. |
7 | Good Morning
not only is the elton john sample beautiful, but chopping up the jay-z "the
ruler's back" just works so fucking well. also, kanye shows that he can
actually rap pretty well on this song in particular. |
6 | Dark Fantasy
never listened to maybe more that 3 kanye tracks before, but then picked
up mbdtf just cuz of the praise i saw it getting, and this was the first song i
heard. i can still remember where i was upon first listen. |
5 | Heard 'Em Say
might have been even higher, but, while i commend kanye for trying to
experiment with sounds, i'm really not a fan of the end section of the song.
it doesn't fit in smoothly at all. |
4 | Devil in a New Dress
produced by Bink, Mike Dean |
3 | Flashing Lights |
2 | Say You Will
one of his most overlooked and frankly epic songs. |
1 | Runaway
tried to reason putting this anywhere but 1, but i just couldn't. |
