| The Summer Of 2012
This summer is shaping up to be an EXCELLENT one for music.
Question is, which of these albums will prove themselves triumphant
this season? Which one will be the definitive albums of the summer
of 2012? | 1 | | Pennywise All or Nothing
RELEASED - With a new singer, it seems they've been revitalized a bit. A
more solid pop-punk sound (emphasis on the punk). | 2 | | Silversun Pickups Neck of the Woods
RELEASED - The Pickups are much like the Foo Fighters in that their albums
are almost always solid, if not groundbreaking. I haven't heard it, but I
plan on it, and we'll see how it sounds. | 3 | | Hot Water Music Exister
MAY 15th - Not quite as biting as their earlier albums, but I think it's a
sound that people can get used to. Really, I'm just happy to hear Chuck's
voice again. It'll almost certainly get some rotation this summer. | 4 | | Killer Mike R.A.P. Music
MAY 15th - This one was a big surprise to me. The only thing I've heard
Killer Mike in was Outkast's "The Whole World." This album reminds me,
oddly, of Flash Bang Grenada--it's pretty filthy, but I'm surprisingly into it.
Multiple listens are required, absolutely. | 5 | | mewithoutYou Ten Stories
MAY 15th - I still haven't heard it yet, but I have high, high hopes for
it...especially considering that I'm one of the apparent few who loved 'It's
All False!...' | 6 | | Tenacious D Rize of the Fenix
MAY 15th - Lots of good summer albums being released on this one day,
aren't there? This one is a great relief, because it's good and actually
funny. "The Tale of Hollywood Jack..." and "Roadie" are already among
some of the best songs I've heard this year so far. | 7 | | John Mayer Born and Raised
MAY 22nd - I haven't heard anything from this album, yet, but if "Queen of
California" is anything to go on, it very well could be the road-trip album of
the year. | 8 | | Japandroids Celebration Rock
MAY 29th - Japandroids' last LP was the soundtrack to my 2009, and more
than any other album on the list, I'm hoping this one will be the same for
2012. | 9 | | Anberlin Untitled
JUNE ?? - Anberlin should be releasing a new album sometime in June, so
says the interwebs. There are many that say that their magnum opus is
still forthcoming--could this be it? | 10 | | The Beach Boys That's Why God Made The Radio
JUNE 5th - The Beach Boys' music, and their influence, STILL define "summer
albums" to this day. And now, the band has the chance to do that much
more directly. Here's hoping they live up to their own storied legacy. | 11 | | Celldweller Wish Upon A Blackstar
JUNE 5th - I have been waiting for this album for literally three years
straight. I can tell you already that it'll be getting quite the rotation in my
car deck when released, guaranteed. | 12 | | Motion City Soundtrack Go
JUNE 12th - Motion City Soundtrack is one of those quintessential pop-punk
bands, and they happen to be releasing a new album just as summer is
getting into full swing. | 13 | | The Offspring Days Go By
JUNE 26th - Folks say they're not fans of The Offspring's new single, but I'm
hoping the album still has positives about it. I doubt they'll go back to their
90's output, but if they can make an album of songs on the level of, say,
"Hammerhead" (which I thoroughly enjoyed), then I'll be satisfied. | 14 | | Nas Life Is Good
JULY 17th - Three songs have been released so far ("Daughters," "The
Don" and "Nasty"), and all three point to this album being the third coming
of Nas (after 'Illmatic' and 'Stillmatic'). I see this album's success as being a
definite benchmark in the comeback of hip-hop music (much like Raekwon's
'OB4CL II'). | 15 | | The Gaslight Anthem Handwritten
JULY 24th - Much like Japandroids, 'The '59 Sound' defined the summer of
'08 like no other album. And also like Japandroids, I'm really hoping this
album will be a defining album of the summer of 2012. | 16 | | Misc. Any others?
Which upcoming albums do you think will define your summer this year? | |
Masochist
05.14.12 | Most release dates are probably set in stone by now, but all are subject to change.
These are upcoming albums that I hope will define my summer this year (five or six of which I added to the database myself). Obviously mostly made up of punk/pop-punk and hip-hop, because that's what I listen to during summer (for the most part).
What are some of yours? | Storm In A Teacup
05.14.12 | Anberlin and Nas will most def be my AOTY but Nas might very well get a 5 from me. | Masochist
05.14.12 | I'm hoping both will end up on my year-end lists. Nas especially; I haven't been so ready for a new hip-hop album since Common's 'The Dreamer, The Believer'.
Plus, if this goes well, all those collaborative albums he's planning (one with Mobb Deep, one with Common, one with Raekwon, one with someone else...) will be even more anticipated. | Storm In A Teacup
05.14.12 | I've NEVER been more hyped up over a rap album. I love The Don and Nasty. Daughters is good too, but I've only listened to it twice so far so it needs to grow.
And then Anberlin is true music. | PistolPete
05.14.12 | I'm pretty comfortable saying Anberlin's will be good but not great. They're a tad past their prime and the last two albums have had some weak points, far from being a magnum opus but still great.
Also waiting for new Metric and Converge. | Storm In A Teacup
05.14.12 | Anberlin's prime was 1 album. :( | Masochist
05.14.12 | There's not another rap album this year that I'm more excited for, especially after having heard the songs. We should expect a review, then? ;-) | Trebor.
05.14.12 | I don't want you Roadie man, I just want KG's chode | Masochist
05.14.12 | When it comes to Anberlin, I feel that 'Never Take Friendship Personal' is underrated. And surprisingly, I feel the same about 'Cities'. That is an EXCELLENT album with many, many good songs. If Anberlin quits after this new one, I'm perfectly fine calling that their magnum opus, but there are those who feel they can do even better. | Storm In A Teacup
05.14.12 | I got Never Take Friendship as a 4.5 and Cities as a 5. Cities is in my top 10 albums of all time and I'm still one of those who thinks they can do better. | Masochist
05.14.12 | For me:
'NTFP' = 4
'Cities' = 4.5
I don't have too many 5's (though that may change soon). But 'Cities' has held up really well in terms of replayability. | PistolPete
05.14.12 | I gave both NTFP and Cities a 4.5, they both have their own unique qualities that make them enjoyable, but I've come to the realization they won't be one of those bands that gives me a 5. Still, pretty sure this new album won't be shitty, this band is incapable of that. | Masochist
05.14.12 | Can't believe I forgot to add my favorite Electronic artist to the list (as he has TWO albums being released this summer):
BT - 'If the Stars Are Eternal, So Are You and I' (JUNE 12th; follow up to 'This Binary Universe')
BT - (Untitled) (LATE SUMMER; follow up to 'These Hopeful Machines') | Wolfhorde
05.14.12 | I hear 4 has got some nice beats. | mangasm
05.14.12 | NEW HE IS LEGEND
NEW REGINA SPEKTOR | Masochist
05.14.12 | Does new HIL come out in summer?! If so, that's DEFINITELY on the list. | mangasm
05.14.12 | I'm almost HIV positive they have a new release slated for this year. | phishing
05.14.12 | Tallest Man on Earth comes out in either June or July I believe | KSK1
05.14.12 | Verse - Bitter Clarity, Uncommon Grace: July 17th | Masochist
05.14.12 | mangasm: Oh, they do, but will it be in time for summer? | ThroneOfAgony
05.14.12 | My goal is to listen to at least 2000 albums this summer, gonna start now | Masochist
05.14.12 | 2000 albums? I don't think I even have 2000 albums I'd WANT to listen to.... | ThroneOfAgony
05.14.12 | I guess you're right on that. I'm being too confident on that because of my summer job (taco bell, hopefully). But really though, I hope to listen to a shit load of music this summer | Masochist
05.14.12 | As do I. So far, I haven't extensively listened to anything from this year except Demon Hunter. That's why I can't wait for these. | ChuckyTruant
05.20.12 | Ah ok yeah coo man |
