Review Summary: This is the sound of someone being beaten in a darkened alleyway and being left a shivering mess in their own bodily fluids. Enjoy the violence.
Whorelord hail from Madison, Wisconsin and in this their only demo (and sole release before splitting up) manage to fuse grind and death metal with a sound that wouldn’t sound out of place on a black metal record. All of this adds up to eleven and a half minutes of amazing violence. The songs are four short sharp 2 – 3 minute long shocks with bursts of pace intersected by power violence style grooves and at times almost full on doom sections. All of this is punctuated by a high rasping vocal style with a distant reverb laden feel that owes itself to countless classic black metal bands. Now this all sounds like a somewhat standard affair until you listen and find yourself inexplicably sucked in, therein lies the thing that makes this demo one I enjoy so much. Possibly due to the fact of the short run time or the groove laden riffs but something about this demo is undeniably catchy, amidst the violent cacophony that emanates from your speakers whist you listen to it you can’t help but enjoy the madness.
Call it black metal, call it grind, call it hardcore, call it whatever the *** you want. The only thing that matters about this demo is the music on offer here is undeniably catchy and at the same time brimming with an evil atmosphere and malevolent violence that a billion other bands have tried at and failed. Whorelord (unfortunately) came to us with one sole demo and then departed as quickly as they came which is a shame as they portrayed on this demo they were a band with a lot of potential. Much like a bar brawl this is a quick violent experience that you will oddly always remember, this is the sound of someone being beaten in a darkened alleyway and being left a shivering mess in their own bodily fluids. Enjoy the violence.
