Release Date: 1998 | Tracklist

Review Summary: An outstanding soundtrack that fits the game just perfectly.

Most gamers (if not all gamers) in the world have heard of Metal Gear Solid, it was released on the Sony Playstation back in 1998 and is now regarded as a classic. The whole franchise itself stands the test of time as being one of the most intriguing and engaging action games ever created. With ultra-interesting characters and twisted storylines and plots such as world destruction and family vengeance, there’s not much anyone wouldn’t like. From “Solid Snake” to “Revolver Ocelot” and other characters such as Snake’s love-interest “Meryl” and cunning sharpshooter “Sniper Wolf", the whole story of this game really captures your heart and doesn’t let go.

The game features a truly great soundtrack that lives up to the game and is nothing short of amazing. Most of the music here is upbeat with techno touches added to it, and some of the tunes wouldn't be out of place on a feature length movie soundtrack. It ranges from infectious harmonies and melodies to fast-paced action music. Most of the original music here was composed and performed by the Konami Computer Entertainment Sound Team Japan, which comprised of Takanari Ishiyama, Gigi Meroni, Kazuki Muraoka, Lee Jeon Myung and Hiroyuki Togo.

Real fans of the game will instantly recognise tracks such as “Encounter” (which plays when you're discovered by the enemy), the soothing, melodramatic piano of "Enclosure", which plays out during the death of character Sniper Wolf, and "Rex's Lair", which plays out near the climax of the game.

Other notable highlights include "Mantis' Hymn", with its haunting, creepy vibe, and the epic "Escape", which brings you right back to memories of the game's final battle with character "Liquid Snake". And of course, there is the glorious title track which on its own, inspires you to embark on your own personal spy mission.

The best track here by a mile is the beautiful "End Title / The Best Is Yet to Come", which is very emotional and has a lot of depth. It features a lovely chorus by Irish singer Aoife Ni Fhearraigh, and has a very Celtic feel to it.

This soundtrack is really special and has lots of replay value. Everything on here is great and is a must-have for fans of the series. Whether it’s for chilling out or to reminisce the good old days, you will definitely feel young again listening to music that brings you back over ten years.

Recommended Tracks:
"End Title / The Best Is Yet to Come"
"Metal Gear Solid Main Theme"
“Encounter”
“Enclosure”

Ok review, you should elaborate on what the album sounds like, and other aspects like songwriting and instrumentation. Also talk more about what you like. Show more, tell less.

Avirov, thanks for the info. I'm not normally a review kinda guy but I personally think the review is decent. I just intended to write a "to the point" write up.

It is good, but to justify a five and to encourage other people to listen in, you should consider adding more detail.

It's a game soundtrack though but yeah I understand what you mean.

Good idea for a review, but I have to say the opportunity was gloriously wasted. The review is - frankly - nothing more than a bunch of loosely connected ideas placed beside each other. Even if this was supposed to be a "to the point" kinda thing, every attempt should be made to at least do it well (and to do it justice). All I get from this review is that fans of the game will recognize and love it (surprise!).

More background info would have been great - say the relevance of the MGS franchise, the composer behind these tracks, what moods are appropriated by the 21 different songs present here, what the songs actually sound like...and the list goes on.

Like I said, opportunity wasted.

3 and 4s soundtracks were so much better but they're all amazing

"You mustn't allow yourself to be chained to fate, to be ruled by your genes. Humans can choose the type of life they want to live. The important thing is that you choose life... and then live."

Game was mindblowing, soundtrack was mindblowing and honestly I think you need to put in a lot more detail to justify such a landmark in the entertainment industry. I won't neg but perhaps think about some of the things that Irving suggested.

Otacon: "I want to ask you. Do you think love can bloom even on a battlefield?"

Solid Snake: "Yeah. I do. I think at any time, any place, people can fall in love with each other. But if you love someone, you have to be able to protect them."

Like I said, I'm not normally a review kinda guy so that's why it isn't up to the usual standards. I addressed the important points but I do agree with you and Irving. Anyway its good to have a review on it because when you think about it, I doubt anyone else was going to do it. Plus I added it to the database so I thought I would do it.

Fair enough man, as long as you're happy with it.

I've been thinking, should this be moved to the soundtracks page (http://www.sputnikmusic.com/bands/Soundtrack/2189/) rather than having one specifically for MGS?

I might add some more to it plus I would be happy if the review stayed where it was.
