Release Date: 1997 | Tracklist

Guttermouth is a U.S. punk band hailing from Orange County, California. When signed to The Offsprings lead singer Brian Dexter Hollands Nitro Records, Guttermouth put together the 1997 album Musical Monkey. Plus a couple others including Teri Yakimoto, and Gorgeous. But by the dawn of the millennium, Guttermouth had switched to Epitaph Records. Releasing a couple more albums.

Guttermouth has a history of saying and doing whatever they believe will catch attention from audience members. They are known for routinely insulting their audience and fans. Maybe a way to get attention from them? At an average live Guttermouth show, a person out of the audience may spit at the lead singer Mark and he spits right back. Guttermouth was kicked off of the 2004 Vans Warped Tour because Guttermouth wore clothes that supported the George W. Bush administration and talked trash to other bands while the bands played. The verbal abuse was especially directed at the popular band My Chemical Romance. Guttermouth claimed that they don't exactly support the George Bush administration. They were just pissed off by the amount of political childesh people who would talk trash politics only because their favorite bands would.

Here's the Line-up:

Vocals - Mike Adkins
Guitars - Derek Davis
Guitars - Scott Sheldon
Drums - Tyler Smith

Here's the album: This album is almost like a rollercoaster with alot of twists and turns. And is farely fast pace. I don't think any of the songs reach anywhere past 3 minutes. But still not a bad thing. Im personally a picky person when it comes to the opening song of an album. And the opening song to this album "Whats the Big Deal" is almost one of the best ive heard. Nothing special, it just comes at you like a freight train. The first thing you hear is both the guitars wailing and in a quick punk rock manner. And then Mike singing, fast enough to where you can barely understand him. The guitars in Musical Monkey are really nothing hard, but most of all, what stands out is Tyler Smith on the drums (which stands out alot.) But the guitars are still very catchy, same with the drumming. The vocals from Mike Adkins, most of the time sound pissed off and in a quick manner. Some may find it annoying. But I find his singing to be original. But probably what stands out the most are how the lyrics in this album are humerous, and can most likely offend a good percentage of people. For example: In the song "Do The Hustle," basically a song directed straight towards rollerbladers. A piece of the lyric goes "Your f*cking gay/f*ck you outta my way, 50,000 jackoffs on rollerblades." And another song that some may not like, might be "What If?" which is a very sarcastic song making fun of The Doors, and The B-52's, and a couple other older bands. Where Mike poorly sings "Love me 2 times...Love me 3 times."

The song Lipstick is a song where Adam sings about how much he hates his mom basically. And would probably appeal mostly to wannabe punk rock kids that think they're moms are worthless. This song is a stand-out track, but just because how ignorant, but funny it is. I really dont think Adam intended anybody to take it seriously. So if you have a smart-a** sense of humor like Adam does, and you enjoy humerous lyrics, you will probably really like this song, well you will probably like the whole album. Another song that is very humerous is #2 "Lucky The Donkey." Where basically the song talks about lucky the donkey.... f*cking your anus. Why? I dont know either, but I find it entertaining. And at the same time, fast-pace and punk influenced.

Really the only song that I think is pointless for having on this album would be the song "Corpse Rotting In Hell." I dont even know if it should be considered a song, its just alot of noises happening all at once. Sounds like a motorcycle running and a dog barking in the background. With some purposely horrid drums playing in the background. Guttermouth is trying to insult and make fun of something in this song. What there trying to make fun of? I dont really care this time, this song is ignorant.

But all-in-all this album is a great album for punk-rock fans with a sweet-tooth and for fans of fast playing drums/twin-guitars. And very fast vocals. And dont forget about the hurmerous lyrics and lyrics that purposely try to offend people.

But then again this album is not great for people that get offended easy. And not good for people that want to hear some solos. But dont forget about the twin guitar action. Anyways, also some may be annoyed easily with this album, because Adams singing can almost be considered an aquired taste. And some may think that Guttermouth just want attention. They might be right.

confusingly written, like when you said, its one of the best opening tracks youve heard, and that its nothing special??

and there alot of other contradictions and oxymorons in there, good, but needs touching up.

nothing special - I just meant that there are no technical drumming or solo's. I try to make that as clear as possible through out the whole review.

Hell thanks for the feedback though! Im sure when I get time I'll go back through and do some touching up. This Message Edited On 07.01.06
sorry man, its funny when people tell other people what THERE rating should be....Randy....
Yeah you are allowed your opinion, fair enough, but from a completely unbiased point of view can you honestly say that this album is near-on perfect? That it is better than excellent? If you honestly think that it is then it is fine to rate it 4.5 but I find it hard to see how you could honestly rate it that highly in comparison to all other music.

*By the way it should be "THEIR".

alright, if I try to look at this album with a complete unbiased point of view, yeah it may be lower. But this album go's way back with me. Actually one of my very first punk albums. And for about a year and a half, this album never left my disc changer. I think a person can rate an album whatever they feel is right. And I grew up with "Musical Monkey."

I can still listen to it today, repeatedly. Without it getting boring. Are you done discussing about the way i rate an album yet? Dont worry about meThis Message Edited On 08.02.06

The rating is entirely up to you, all I was saying was that from the majority of people's view this isn't that high, if you want to rate it 4.5 that's your choice, and that's one of the good things about Sputnik.
