3.8 excellent | Erwann S. STAFF | May 9th 23 | Two Vanguard tunes and two studio takes, and all of them are on the verge of being mega-bangers. The two studio takes are enjoyable yet ultimately classic "dad jazz". "India" features some Dolphy dissonance that didn't please me much - it sounds much better when both Dolphy and Trane play the same motif together, and the title track loses itself in some monotony. Shame, 'cause the banging minutes are truly banging (those Elvin Jones' fucking drums on the t/t would put St Merat to shame).

3.5 great | GamamJ | October 29th 20 | A solid album, sure, and gives us a few first tastes of how experimental Coltrane is about to be, but the production is a huge minus. The members other than Coltrane are almost not to be found, especially the piano, and my issue related to this goes beyond the production. I feel they deserve a lot more soloing room than they get.

4.0 excellent | Bedex | October 12th 20 | After a lot of frankenstein albums assembled without Coltrane's input, it feels nice to finally come back to an actual record of his. We're back to the spice, especially with 1 which is perhaps the most dissonant and 'experimental' we've seen him being on record yet. It's almost excessive in places, but after the lukewarm fake coltrane albums that preceded it still feels cool. The track also introduces the major issue with the album: mixing and panning. While on 1 it's not too bad (but still a weak point), which can be partly forgiven because of it being a live take, on 2 it is frankly awful even though it isn't a live one. 3 improves but has some blatant mixing quirks, and 4 is the best one off. Despite the mix 2 is nice, and the more upbeat and dancey 3 is perhaps the best track here with really nice prominent drumming and a cool piano addition as conclusion. 4 is softer and very rainy feeling (so the title is of questionable accuracy hehe), super nice, but it concludes a bit into nothing, which coupled with the non-uniform mix hurts the album feel a bit, dropping this half a point. 3.95
