Band: Descendents, The
Album: Cool To Be You (LP)
Released: March 22nd, 2004
The Descendents are one of the most profound pop punk bands around, with a lifespan of an amazing 22 years (before I was even born!) and 10 full length records. This album,
Cool To Be You, is their 10th record.
Talking - 7/10
A song which jumps straight into how the album should sound. Fast and heavy riffs, quick drum beats and your standard lyrics. This is a great feel-good anthem.
Nothing With You - 8/10
Another amazing song following up the previous track with lyrics most people can relate to. With more fast music and great vocals, this is another favourite for any Descendents fan!
She Don't Care - 7/10
This is kinda slower but still has the same pumping energy from the previous songs. The lyrics are kinda bland and to the point, but not bad. The music however is different and darker.
'Merican - 9/10
Since I reviewed the
'Merican EP this song has grown on my a lot. One of the best political songs around at the moment with lots of facts, great music and amazing vocals. Shame it's on 1:51
Dog And Pony Show - 8/10
I don't really get this song, but the intro is catchy. As is the music and the lyrics. Just your typical fast 'Dents song here.
Blast Off - 9/10
Another one of my favourites, with amazing riffs and great vocals. The middle "4, 3, 2, 1, Blast off" is very catchy and a great sing-a-long. The music really adds to the song as well with cool solos and beats.
Dreams - 7/10
This is another one of your average Descendents songs with amazing music and cool and catchy lyrics (especially in the chorus). Not really much special about it other than that.
Cool To Be You - 9/10
This is another mind-blowing song in my opinion. It has great lyrics which again people can relate to, cool music and it's fast. The song is kinda a build up to
Mass Nerder
Maddie - 6/10
I don't really like this. It isn't Descendents to make slow songs, which is what this seems like. Nevertheless it has more good lyrics.
Mass Nerder - 9/10
Probably my favourite song on the album, and an album to all dorks, nerds and all in between. Great appealing lyrics and a fun song to listen to, with great music to match.
One More Day - 8/10
Matching earlier songs, this is a slowish song. It still shows the Decendents' energy but isn't as fast. The lyrics are pretty deep and the music adds to the song's feeling. A good song, not the best though.
[b]Tack - 8/10[/b
Another typical 'Dents so, with fast and furious riffs and beats and hard vocals. I don't really get the title, but the song is pretty cool. A great song to listen to.
Anchor Grill - 7/10
Usually an album trails off way before this point, but it was bound to happen. All the same music for 36 minutes has it's effect, and makes the songs less interesting. Still a good song though, but after all the others it isn't as energetic.
Dry Spell - 6/10
I think this is another bad point of the album. Sadly the music and vocals, both great seperatly don't go together. It seems like it is missing something and lacks feeling.
So, after 22 years The Descendents are still making great pop punk music for kids to mindlessly jump up and down to. Props to them though for creating the same energetic albums they used to. Shows that age doesn't matter
