Strung Out
Punk

Southern California punkers Strung Out were formed in 1992, with a lineup featuring vocalist Jason Cruz, guitarists Jake Kiley and Rob Ramos, bassist Jim Cherry, and drummer Jordan Burns. The quintet signed with NOFX bassist Fat Mike's Fat Wreck Chords label in 1993, and issued their debut album, Another Day in Paradise, the following year. The band took an artistic leap forward with the 1996 follow-up Suburban Teenage Wasteland Blues, which began to build their following among fans of new-school punk-pop. 1998 saw the release of the Crossroads and Illusions EP and the full-length Twisted ...read more

1998 saw the release of the Crossroads and Illusions EP and the full-length Twisted by Design, a more progressive work which found Strung Out beginning to mix elements of technique-oriented heavy metal into their instrumental attack. Sadly, after the release of Twisted By Design, bassist and main lyrist Jim Cherry left the band. Shortly after, Fat Wreck Chords also issued a set of early Strung Out material titled The Skinny Years...Before We Got Fat. The band returned in 2000 with the EP The Element of Sonic Defiance, a showcase for their new bassist Chris Aiken, and their new, somewhat more experimental style, incorporating a lot more metal influences than their earlier works. In 2002, the band released the full-length LP An American Paradox, showing yet more of their metal influences, whilst still retaining their own unique sound. After recording an acoustic version of the song Velvet Alley for the Punk Goes acoustic comp, the band made their contribution to the Fat Wreck Chords "Live in a Dive" series, with an incredible live album highlighting both their punk roots and current sound. Their current release, Exile In Oblivion is a far darker experience than any previous work, with most songs written around minor keys, and lyrics leaning towards the darker side of life, without fully embracing it. They remain as one of the greatest and most under-rated punk bands of the 90's, and are perhaps all the better for it. « hide
