Joe Zawinul

Josef Erich Zawinul was born in Vienna, Austria in 1932 of Sinti descent.As Joe Zawinul he revolutionized jazz by integrating elements of rock music into his sound and so inventing jazz fusion. Among many other prizes he won the “Best Keyboardist” award from jazz magazine Down Beat 30 times.His fame started in the early 60s when he joined saxophonist Cannonball Adderley and composed several songs for him, among them the hit Mercy, Mercy, Mercy.In the late 60s he recorded several albums with trumpeter Miles Davis, among them the revolutionary “Bitches Brew” for which he composed the side-long track Pharaoh’s Dance. Miles Davis said about Zawinul’s music: “It ain’t white, it ain’t black, but it grooves harder than anything.”In 1970 he cofounded the band Weather Report with saxophonist Wayne Shorter.Joe Zawinul was one of the first pianists to use electric pianos and synthesizers, in live shows he temporary employed over 10 synthesizers.His most famous work became Weather Report’s album “Heavy Weather” and its song Birdland, which received an unusual amount of airplay for a jazz song and won three Grammys.In the 90s he turned towards world music with his ensemble “Zawinul Syndicate”.Joe Zawinul died of skin cancer on September 11th 2007, one week after concluding a six-week tour. « hide
