The album had a hard rock sound with major elementsoffunkandjazz, whichdevelopedfurther with their followingalbumS.C.I.E.N.C.E.in 1997. After the release of S.C.I.E.N.C.E. ,Incubusreplaced DJ Lyfewith DJ Chris Kilmore due to creativedifferences. The 1999 album Make Yourselfmarkedakindofbreakthroughfor theband, as they got more and more popular (mostlybecause of the song Drive, which hadalotofairplay).Building off thesuccess of theirprevious album, Incubus released Morning Viewin2001, an albumthatwasmuchmellowerthan theirprevious releases.

At the end of 2003, Incubus announced that bassist Dirk Lance had been replaced byformerRootsguitaristBenKenney, whichultimatelyleadto thecreation of their new sound. After a creative pause, they released ACrowLeftOfTheMurder, which sounded nothing like anypreviousmaterial released. After doing their first worldtourin2004,Incubusworked on variousmaterial throughout 2005. In 2006,Incubus released their5th studioalbumLightGrenades, which tookthe band's soundto a different approach, yet again.
