Florence and the Machine centres around Florence Welch, an art-school drop out from Camberwell in South London. The daughter of an art historian and author she grew up in
a very creative environment, and fell in love with music from an early age. After being discovered singing in the toilet of a bar Florence has gone from strength to strength,
releasing a number of singles and being awarded the Critics Choice Brit Award in February 2009 without having yet released an album as well as making quite a (literal) splash
at SXSW 2008.
Supporting Florence is 'the Machine', a fluid roster of musicians who provide a sonic soundscape to contain Florence's powerful voice. The band is recognised for it's relatively
low-fi acoustic sound compared to other emerging acts with the band usually including a guitarist, a drummer, a keyboardist and a harpist. The current line up comprises:
Robert Ackroyd (guitar), Christopher Lloyd Hayden (drums), Isabella Summers (keyboards) and Tom Monger (harp).
Most often referred to as soul inspired indie the band's music centres around Florence's stunning vocals, with a loud echoing drum sound providing a perfect contrast to the
melodic tinkling of the harp. Lyrically Florence is quite abstract, full of metaphors and stories which seem to focus on the dark and fantastic and often sounds almost like a
musical fairy-tale.
With debut album 'Lungs' set to drop on 6th July 2009, expect to hear plenty more of Florence and the Machine. « hide |
