Drive-by Truckers

Drive-By Truckers are an alternative country/Southern rock band based in Athens, Georgia founded in 1996. They rely heavily on the raspy vocals of their singer and a three guitar attack. After three years on the road, a tight-knit group of musicians emerged and began work on 2001's Southern Rock Opera, a double album weaving the history of Lynyrd Skynyrd into a narrative about a fictitious rock band called "Betamax Guillotine", whose story unfolds within the context of the South during the 1970s. Their 2003 follow up Decoration Day, like its predecessor, received much critical praise. It was another concept album, containing characters who are faced with hard decisions about marriage, incest, break-ups, revenge, murder, and suicide. In 2004, they released yet another concept album entitled The Dirty South, further exploring the mythology of the South, with songs focusing on Sam Phillips and Sun Records, John Henry, and a three-song suite about Sheriff Buford Pusser. « hide
