Cradle of Filth is an English extreme metal band, formed in Suffolk, England during 1991. Cradle of Filth is an English extreme metal band, formed in Suffolk, England during 1991. The band currently consists of Dani Filth (vocals), Paul Allender (guitars), Charles Hedger (guitars), Dave Pybus (bass), Caroline Campbell (keyboards), and Martin Skaroupka (drums). Across their timeline, the group have undergone numerous line-up changes. For example, drums and guitars on studio releases have each been played by no less than three different individuals, some of which have returned after a departure; keyboards likewise present six different individuals, and so on. Filth is the group's longest serving and principal founding member.
The group are known for their unique meld of gothic, black, symphonic, and other forms of extreme metal. Their sound can be thought of as a mix of melodic trends from Iron Maiden and Judas Priest, to the early examples of black metal from Venom, Mayhem and Bathory. Completing this are keyboards, which simply provide impressions of a symphonic dynamic. The specific genre of this complete amalgamation is often followed by vigorous debate. The current main guitarist for the group, Allender, disapproves of the notion that the band grew from the surge of black metal during the 1990s, claiming this to be merely a side effect of their onstage theatrics and make-up. Many have also cited the band’s Satanic imagery and occasional lyrical slurs to be a reason for their notoriety, and hence their rise to fame, but the band themselves maintain this is all merely for shock value as opposed to any sense of hardline belief system.
They are also well-known for the conceptualism presented on many of their offerings; each of their albums so far (sans Nymphetamine and The Principle of Evil Made Flesh) deal with a single principle concept. These tend to include themes portraying vampirism, mythology, the Occult, gothic literature, poetry and historic figures such as the prominent serial killers Gilles de Rais for Godspeed on the Devil’s Thunder and Elizabeth Bàthory for Cruelty and the Beast. Many albums also utilise operatic devices such as the aforementioned string and other synthesizer patches. Similarly, libretto-like narration is also often presented by guest narrators, who either narrate objectively, or as a character themselves.
Brief history:Following their instigation in 1991, the band would spend the next three years through line-up changes and offering low budget demos. Their 1994 debut album, The Principle of Evil Made Flesh, alludes to the band’s early black metal trend before their mainstream critical success with the following albums, Dusk... and Her Embrace (1996), Cruelty and the Beast (1998) and Midian (2000). The former of the three invigorated the group, and displays perhaps the earliest example of the sound they’ve become known for. Additionally, numerous critical events were to take place during this period such as the inclusion of Sarah Jezebel Deva during 1995 as a contrasting backing vocalist to Filth’s shrieks; Allender would also return during 2000 for Midian as a full time guitarist, having left in 1995. It also became the period in which the group became commercially successful.
Roadrunner Records became aware of their successes following 2003’s Damnation and a Day and signed them on a three album deal, subsequently yielding Nymphetamine (2004), Thornography (2006) and Godspeed on the Devil’s Thunder (2008). As before, members came and went alongside releases and other events. Drummer, Adrian Erlandsson (brother of Arch Enemy’s Daniel Erlandsson) left in late 2006, and was up until then one of the more stable members of the group; he would be replaced by Skaroupka. Later in 2008, Deva ended her 14 year stint as a member to pursue her solo project, and finally, the band had a fallout with Roadrunner over “artistic restrictions and mindless inhibitions” according to Filth.
Returning to the independent label, Peaceville Records, would of course bring greater artistic freedom for the group, maintaining their fairly consistent two year release schedule with Darkly, Darkly, Venus Aversa in 2010, once again vigorously changing members. In less than two years the band's keyboards and backing vocals were played on separate occsaions starting with Rosie Smith and then onto Ashley Ellyllon (of Abigail Williams). They are currently performed by Caroline Campbell as previously noted. « hide |
