Based in Glasgow, Scotland, the seven-piece band released their first two albums in 1996, sparking off
an indie-pop revival in the country. The first of those two albums, Tigermilk, had been written and
recorded for a University project, making their initial success all the more impressive. Through their
first two years of public existence, the band shielded their personalities, submitting publicity photos
featuring a girl that wasn't in the band (a move clearly inspired by The Smiths) and reluctantly posing
for photo shoots. They eventually came to mainstream attention when, with the aid of a campaign led
by several notable radio stations and magazines, they pulled off the biggest upset in the history of the
Brit Awards by beating Steps to the Best New Artist gong in 1998. The band have continued to release
modestly successful, critically acclaimed albums ever since, with Murdoch also finding time for a side
project in the shape of God Help the Girl. « hide |
