A virtual anachronism during a time when rock was drifting away from its roots, Creedence Clearwater Revival emerged as a band that would fight the growing self-indulgence of psychedelia by concentrating on substance over sight, and quality over innovation. Not surprisingly, Creedence Clearwater Revival was somewhat un-hip during their day, but after the smoke cleared, classic rock was left with a collection of influential singles and a new genre known as swamp rock. Originating from the San Francisco Bay area, Creedence Clearwater was formed in 1967 when leader and resident songwriter John Fogerty assumed control of the band. From the very beginning, Creedences sound reflected their country and blues influences- illustrated by their delta-like singing and effective use of electrified riffs over acoustic guitar. This sound, as well as John Fogertys common man perspective on songwriting, meant that the bands talents would not be applied to long concept albums, as was the trend, but rather vested into a collection of politically conscious singles. Among these singles were the enormously popular Proud Mary, Green River, and Born on the Bayou all of which celebrate the people and culture of the Mississippi swampland, a region which, ironically, was foreign to the band. Creedence Clearwater Revival dissolved in 1972, owing to a growing frustration of the band members against the ever controlling John Fogerty. But today the band is still remembered as the greatest singles groups of the classic rock era second only to The Beatles. And with songs like Suzie Q and Fortunate Son immortalized in Vietnam movies such as Apocalypse Now, and the war scene in Forrest Gump, their down-to-earth protest songs of fairness and hard work are still evoked even now. « hide |
