Operation Ivy were one of the first bands to fuse Ska and Punk. Their influence around the Berkley Indie scene, and the Alternative scene all together, reflects in bands such as Green Day, The Suicide Machines, Sublime, and many more. name Operation Ivy came from a nuclear test which was funnily enough called Operation Ivy. After Matt Freeman and Lint(Tim Armstrong)'s band, Basic Radio, broke up they wanted to make a underground punk rock band. Lint knew Jesse Michael because he was once in a band with him and thought he fitted the role ideally. Jesse was actually a drummer but he wanted to try out singing in a band so ended up teaching Dave Mello to drum and he sang. After a few months they played there first ever gig in front of 30 people in Dave's garage and crappy videos of this can be found. The band's first taste of the studio was recording a few songs for a compilation called Turn It Around. Their engineer was Kevin Army who went on to form Lookout Records in Autumn of 1987 just to release an Operation Ivy record. They went back into the studio in November to record the Hectic EP which was released in January. This EP was their first taste of large success and spent the majority of 1988 playing large gigs. The band recorded their first LP, Energy, in January 1989 and released it in May. The day after the release of Energy, Operation Ivy played their last ever gig when they just decided to call it quits. Lint and Matt went on to form Rancid, their most successful project. Dave formed a bunch of bands including Schlong, and Downfall. Jesse hid out of the scene for a while until returning with bands like Big Rig, and his most successful band Common Rider. « hide
