Soundgarden
Grunge

In 1986, this fateful band completed their lineup and set out to break the conventions of heavy metal through the grunge movement. Soundgarden can be considered your typical Seatle-based grunge band, but the distinction here lies in their unyielding loyalty to the grunge fanbase. In 1986, this fateful band completed their lineup and set out to break the conventions of heavy metal through the grunge movement. Soundgarden can be considered your typical Seatle-based grunge band, but the distinction here lies in their unyielding loyalty to the grunge fanbase. As early as the late 80's, members of Soundgarden knew that their unparalleled success would lie in the hands of this cult-like, underground fanbase, but in order to add substance to their fame they temporarily marketed themselves as a heavy metal band and even toured with Guns 'n Roses. It was a successful endeavor as they didn't lose their grasp on their grunge followers, but in all they also didn't drop their loyalty to the dark, humerous and unconventional grunge sound. In 1994 with the release of "Superunknown", their persistence payed off dramatically. The album toppled the charts instantaneously, and within moments Soundgarden became the new voice of popular grunge. Preceding releases like "Badmotorfinger" were generally overshadowed by other Seatle-based bands' success (namely Nirvana), but these albums' music was later acknowledged after Soundgarden genuinely broke into the mainstream. It was after the following success of "Down on the Upside", which somewhat flopped due to the ending grunge movement, that Soundgarden finally decided to dissolve. Even up to this day, the non-existent band maintains a loyal fanbase. « hide
