A hard rocking trio from Aberdeen, Washington, the same city Nirvana's Kurt Cobain and Krist Novoselic grew up in, the Melvins are one of the most influential rock artists of the late 80's and early 90's. Founder/singer/guitarist Buzz Osbourne aka King Buzzo worked at a grocery store with another clerk by the name of Melvin who was widely despised by his co-workers, the band members found his name to be an appropriate band name at the time. The Melvins influences include early punk acts such as The Stooges, Black Flag, and the Sex Pistols and also slow rock acts like Flipper and the Swans. The Melvins play extremely heavy, slow, and sludgy Black Sabbath style-metal that features the superb drumming of the only other constant member of the band, Dale Crover. The band has had a revolving series of bassists over the years most notably Lori "Lorax" Black and Matt Lukin who later formed Mudhoney. Though the Melvins only ever garnered a cult following, they influenced a number of great grunge and metal bands over the years such as Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, Nirvana, Kyuss, Boris (who took their name from a Melvins song), Green River, etc. « hide |
