Cypress Hill formed in 1989 in Los Angeles,California by Latin-American rappers DJ Muggs, B-Real and Sen Dog. The name Cypress Hill refers tothe place where the first members of the band havelived, who grew up mostly in Cypress Avenue inSouth Gate, Los Angeles. They have sold up to 17million records worldwide by 2006 Their first album, which was self-titled, wasreleased in November 1991. Its single was"Phuncky Feel One," but it was the B-side "How ICould Just Kill a Man" (formerly "Trigga HappyNigga") that attracted more airplay on urban radioand college radio. Based on the success of thesingle and other tracks such as bilingual track"Latin Lingo" and X-rated Spanish track "Tres equis",the album sold two million copies. Subsequently,DJ Muggs produced House of Pain's first album, then working with the Beastie Boys andFunkdoobiest. The band made their firstappearance at Lollapalooza on the side stage in1992. Black Sunday, the group's second album, debutedat number one on the Billboard 200 in 1993,recording the highest Soundscan for a rap group upuntil that time. With "Insane in the Brain" becominga crossover hit, the album went double platinum inthe U.S. and sold 3.25 million albums. As one of the first rappers fighting for thelegalization of marijuana, Cypress Hill was bannedfrom Saturday Night Live after Muggs smoked ajoint of marijuana and the band trashed theirinstruments while playing their second single "IAin't Goin' Out Like That". The band headlined the"Soul Assassins" tour with House of Pain andFunkdoobiest as support, then performed on acollege tour with Rage Against the Machine andSeven Year Bitch. In 1993, Cypress Hill also hadtwo tracks on the Judgment Night soundtrack, teamed up with Pearl Jam and Sonic Youth. The band played at the 1994 Woodstock Festivalintroducing their new member Eric Bobo who wasformerly a percussionist with the Beastie Boys.Bobo is the son of famous salsa musician WillieBobo. Muggs, when asked about the new member, said: "As Latinos we thought it would be a goodidea to build in some of this latin jazz flavor."Rolling Stone Magazine named the band as thebest rap group in their music awards voted bycritics and readers. Cypress Hill played atLollapalooza for two successive years topping thebill in 1995. They appeared on an episode of "TheSimpsons" in which Homer, Bart and Lisa attendthe Lollapalooza- inspired "Hullabalooza". Their thirdalbum III (Temples of Boom) was released in 1995selling 1.5 million copies and reaching number 3 onthe Billboard 200 despite not having a hit single.Cypress Hill also contributed a track "I Wanna GetHigh" to the High Times sponsored "Hempilation"album to support NORML. Sen took a break from the band to form punk-rapband SX-10. Meanwhile in 1996, Cypress Hillappeared on the first Smokin' Grooves tour, featuring Ziggy Marley, the Fugees, Busta Rhymesand A Tribe Called Quest. The band also released anine track EP Unreleased and Revamped with raremixes. In 1997, band members focused on their solocareers. Muggs released Muggs Presents ... theSoul Assassins featuring contributions from Wu-Tang Clan members, Dr. Dre, KRS-One, Wyclef Jeanand Mobb Deep. B-Real appeared with BustaRhymes, Coolio, L.L. Cool J and Method Man on"Hit Em High" from the multi-platinum Space JamSoundtrack. He also appeared with RBX, Nas andKRS-One on "East Coast Killer, West Coast Killer" onDr. Dre's Dr. Dre presents...The Aftermath album, and released an album entitled "The Psycho Realm"from his side project of the same name. Throughthe focus that year was not on Cypress Hill, theband played Smokin' Grooves with George Clintonand Erykah Badu.He also was part of a rap metalband with one of the guitarists from Fear Factorycalled "Kush". Cypress Hill released IV in 1998 which went gold inthe U.S. on the backs of hit single "Tequila Sunrise"and another tribute to smoking marijuana "Dr.Greenthumb." Sen Dog also released the Get Woodsampler as part of SX-10 on Jordan Schur's Fliplabel. In 1999, Cypress Hill helped with the PC crime/verymature video game Kingpin: Life Of Crime. 3 oftheir songs from the 1998 IV album were in thegame. B-Real also did some of the voices of thepeople in the game. Also in 1999, the band released a greatest-hitsalbum in Spanish, Los grandes xitos en espaol.Cypress Hill then fused genres with their two-discrelease, Skull & Bones, in 2000. The first disc,"Skull" was comprised of rap tracks while "Bones"explored further the group's forays into rock. Thealbum reached the Top 5 on the Billboard 200 andnumber 3 in Canada. The first single was "RockSuperstar" for rock radio and "Rap Superstar" forurban radio. The band also released a Live at theFillmore disc in 2000. Cypress Hill continued their experimentation withrock on The Stoned Raiders album on 2001.However, its sales were a disappointment, as thedisc did not even reach the top 50 of the U.S. albumcharts. Cypress Hill recorded "Just Another Victim" for theWWE as a theme song for Taz. At the time, theWWE was using original music for almost all of thewrestlers, so this was an unusual step for thecompany to take, but it remains one of the morememorable songs to emerge from the wrestlingorganization. The band released Till Death Do Us Part on March23, 2004. The album saw the band experiment withreggae especially on the lead single "What's YourNumber". The track features Tim Armstrong ofRancid on bass and Rob Aston of The Transplantson backup vocals. It is based on the classic song"Guns of Brixton" on The Clash's London Callingand has proven to be a success on the modern rockcharts. However, people who expected the originalCypress Hill-Flow from the first four albums gotdisappointed. The album also featuresappearances by Damian Marley, son of Bob Marley,Prodigy and Twin of Mobb Deep and producer theAlchemist. « hide
