Simply one of the most highly-regarded, influential alternative rock bands of all time. The band debuted with the Come On Pilgrim EP in 1987, before releasing two albums acknowledged as classics - the abrasive Surfer Rosa, as produced by Steve Albini, and the sweeter, more melodic and polished Doolittle. These albums established several elements of the Pixies sound that would later become alternative rock staples - quiet verse/loud chorus dynamics, boy/girl vocal harmonies, angular, simple lead guitar lines, and melodic basslines. Mainstream success was almost instant in England and most parts of mainland Europe, though American notoriety escaped them until 1991, when Kurt Cobain admitted that "Smells Like Teen Spirit" was 'my failed attempt to write a Pixies song'.
Two more albums followed in the early 90s - Bossanova and Trompe Le Monde. Throughout both these albums, Kim Deal became increasingly marginalised, which led to her forming The Breeders as a creative outlet, and also led to the band's eventual disbandment in 1993. Frank Black continued with a successful solo career, and The Breeders (ironically) went on to have more commercial success than Pixies ever did.
A money-spinning reunion tour spanned much of 2004 and 2005, and a new album is in the works, apparently to be produced by Tom Waits. « hide |
