They were discovered when James Honeyman-Scott, of the Pretenders, saw them playing on a street corner in front of the venue the Pretenders were playing at that night. A self-titled debut was released in 1983 on Slash Records, mixing a combination of folk and punk music that appealed to many adolescents. Although the album was never a big hit on the charts, it ended up going platinum nearly ten years after it's initial release. The record did however spawn some successful singles, including "Blister in the Sun", "Add It Up", and "Kiss Off". Although the band released many other albums (their third being produced by Jerry Harrison of the Talking Heads), none could measure up to the success of the debut.
