Melbourne three-piece Sandpit enjoyed only a relatively short career before the members went their separate ways. Forming in 1994, their releases spanned the area between mid-1996 and late 1998. The band are commonly described as melodic indie-pop in the vein of Sonic Youth, with the defining characteristics of their sound courtesy of vocalist/guitarist Brendan Webb’s pursuit of using alternate guitar tunings and unfamilar melodies to create a more individual sound for his band. He was accompanied in the band by bassist/backing vocalist Stephanie Ashworth while drum duties were performed early on by Paul Sciacca, and later on by Greg Wales. Signing to Fellaheen Records in May of 1996, the band released two five track EPs (Lessons In Posture in July of ’96, and The Tyranny Of Creeps in February of ’97). In January and April of ’98 the band put out CD singles for Along The Moors and Greater Expectations to lead up to the release of their debut album, On Second Thought. This was to be the final release of their career, with a compilation of their first two EPs made available in September of ’98 under the title of The Hunting Picture. After the disbanding of Sandpit, Stephanie Ashworth went on to join Something For Kate, while Brendan Webb has continued making music under the name of BL Stryker as well as live appearances alongside By Ferry Or Steamer, Braving The Seabed, and New Buffalo. Since then he has become involved in music programming and production, and signed to Mushroom Music Publishing in 2003. « hide
