With the release of their debut album, Murmur, REM can be credited with a lot that lies at the heart of indie music today; a tradition only continued by the release of other such classic albums, including Document and Life's Rich Pageant. By the release of Out Of Time, there were clear signs that the band's sound was changing, and this was only reaffirmed by the global bestseller Automatic For The People, which spawned singles such as Man On The Moon, and the ubiquitous Everybody Hurts. The band's career was damaged by the departure of drummer Bill Berry in 1997, and on their three subsequent studio albums there have been signs of a creative downturn, culminating in 2001's Reveal, which was near universally recieved with disappointment.
