By the release of Out Of Time, there were clear signs that the band's sound was changing, and this was only reaffirmed by the global bestseller Automatic For The People, which spawned singles such as Man On The Moon, and the ubiquitous Everybody Hurts. The band's career was damaged by the departure of drummer Bill Berry in 1997, and on their three subsequent studio albums there have been signs of a creative downturn, culminating in 2001's Reveal, which was near universally recieved with disappointment. While the band's creative future remains doubtful, their legacy is huge, and they are still an immensely popular touring act.
