Newen Afrobeat was originally the brain child of Chilean composer/singer Nicholas Urbina in 2009, inspired by the music of Fela Kuti. He composed all the music for the first self-titled album which was released in 2013. The band toured in this formation until the mid-2010s when Urbina relocated to the United States. They did play together one last time at the Felabration Festival in Lagos in 2016 (founded in 1998 by Fela's daughter, Yeni).
