Gustav Leonhardt (30th of May, 1928 - 16th of January, 2012) was a Dutch keyboard player, musicologist, editor, teacher and conductor,
primarily known for his extensive Bach interpretations (Which take up the majority of his discography) and being, along with peers such as
Nikolaus Harnoncourt, one of the key promoters of period instruments and historically informed performances. He was particularly known as a
Harpsichordist, recording almost all of his Bach interpretations (including several transcriptions) in this instrument.

Though Johann Sebastian Bach was his primary source of inspiration and focus (to the point of pioneering many now-widely-accepted theories
regarding his music, such as the art of fugue being intended for a keyboard), he also performed and recorded works for composers such as
George Frideric Handel, Orlando Gibbons, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Antonio Vivaldi and Claudio Monteverdi, among many others. « hide |
