The group achieved massive success in the mid-90s as one of the premier 'britpop' bands and were perhaps most commonly recognised for oft being on the receiving end of Oasis and the Gallagher brothers' ire. Blur are regarded as mainstays of the British nationalist pop tradition (even as they moved to American-influenced indie rock), much in the same category as the Kinks, the Jam and the Smiths. Despite being permanent fixtures on the British pop scene for fifteen years now, Blur only received one brief break in the American market, with the release of the massive anthem "Song 2" in 1997. The group took a early in the new decade as vocalist Damon Albarn masterminded the hip-hop group the Gorillaz. Main Albarn collaborator Coxon left the group in 2002, and though the band released an album the following year, they are currently on hiatus.
