After many years and successful album, Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band released their first compilation in 1994. Although it would take another compilation to really complete his career, this album is worth picking up if you really enjoy Bob Seger's work. From "Roll Me Away" to "In Your Time", this compilation should really fill your craving for some of that old time rock and roll. And so as the night moves, so does this review....
1. Roll Me Away (4:40)
The first song is a popular tune with an upbeat feel to it yet at the same time the lyrics make you feel like your girlfriend just dumped you. I'm not sure what Seger's point of this song was but I guess if it motivates you then the song may have a better meaning for you. Musically, it's driven by piano and drums and a whole lot of nothin' else, so really, nothin' too special 'bout this song, but it ain't bad. 4/5
2. Night Moves (5:25)
One of Bob Seger's biggest hits of all time, yeah, this is a great song from beginning to end. Starting with an acoustic guitar riff, Bob Seger then sings some great lyrics that make you remember the past, especially those crazy summer days. It's also quite long for an acoustic song so it really has an epic feel to it. This is just another classic song up there with the other great songs that have been produced throughout time. 5/5
3. Turn the Page (5:03)
Coming right after "Night Moves" is another successful hit song. Musically, its a bit weak with only a nice saxaphone to go along with a slow bouncy bass that you hear in the background. But the lyrics in this song are soem of the best ever. About the hardships of being on the road and all the pressures of the rock and roll lifestyle and what not, this song describes it perfectly and Bob Seger never quite outdid himself like he did on this song. All in all, amazing song that shall live on forever. 5/5
4. You'll Accomp'ny Me (4:00)
A sweet acoustic gem with some great vocals from Seger. The lyrics are great and up to the usual standard that's Bob Seger. It has a good feel to it and the acoustic riff is a perfect fit with the lyrics making this one of the better, yet underated songs on the album. 5/5
5. Hollywood Nights (5:02)
This song is another popular radio tune by Bob Seger. The running bass line is sure to hook you as well as the wonderful lyrics that don't dissapoint. This is a great song to cruise to especially along the beach and at night time too! This is another classic song to remember for a long, long time. 5/5
6. Still the Same (3:20)
Starting with a nice piano riff, Seger seems to get a bit serious in this song with his lyrics. The music is nothin' too special unfortunately and the background vocals that come in later in the song really annoy instead of help the song. Also Bob Seger does a poor job singing if you ask me and this is not really one of his best songs. 3/5
7. Old Time Rock and Roll (3:14)
Back to the rock and rollin' with an old rock cover. It has an upbeat rythm and just a fun vibe throughout the whole song. The lyrics are catchy though the song seems to end a bit short, its still a good one for sure. 5/5
8. We've Got Tonight (4:40)
A ballad like song with some really nice paino playing under Seger's emotional song. It can get a bit old after a few listens but is really a sweet little ballad that's different then a lot of other ballads you hear anymore. 4/5
9. Against the Wind (5:33)
An upbeat yet serious rocker that makes for a great cruisin' tune. Again and again, Seger writes some lyrics that fit the music perfectly. The piano is really well done again in this song and combined with everything else that's great in this song, make for a classic hit yet again. 5/5
10. Mainstreet (3:42)
This song starts out with a ncie electric guitar riff that you'll hear throughout the entire song. In this song, the electric guitar is a big focus on the song and it doesn't dissapoint. Bob Seger does a fantastic job singing and this song is a really sad song. The lyrics seem to have a double meaning to it if you look at them you can relate to a lot of stuff with them. Nothing more to say, its a great song. 5/5
11. The Fire Inside (5:55)
The longest song on the album, that is driven by a catchy piano riff. You'll be sure to like the singing and lyrics again in this song like you have in every other song by Bob Seger. This song also has an epic feel to it like "Night Moves" and "Turn the Page" and really, its actually quite an underated song. 5/5
12. Like a Rock (5:54)
Only a second shorter then the previous song, you probably remember this song iin old chevy truck commercials. The lyrics kind of sum up Seger's career and what he went through and all that stuff. There's a nice little guitar solo and the singing is done to perfection with a lot of emotion. 5/5
13. C'est La Vie (2:59)
There's something about this song that I don't like. It really annoys me and think that it was a bad choice to cover this song and put it on this album. Oh well, even the great musicians plunder some times. 2/5
14. In Your Time (3:05)
An extra bonus to this compilation, a serious song that reminds me of "The Fire Inside". Not too much too say 'bout this song, its a bit obscure but it has the usual good lyrics and upbeat rythms that are known from Bob Seger. 4/5
I must say for a compilation, this is pretty good but I think if they'd added soem different songs and taken out some others that shouldn't off been there it would've been perfect. "Night Moves", "Turn the Page" and "Hollywood Nights" should delight all the fans and there's plenty of songs that the true hardcore fans can enjoy. I would've like to seen "Her Strut", "Rock and Roll Never Forgets" and maybe "Sunspot Baby" make it on this album but oh well. Other than the poor cover of "C'est La Vie", this album shall not dissapoint.
