Review Summary: Horrifying, and beautiful, all at the same time. So Hideous, My Love presents an extremely interesting concept, one that really hasn't been touched by many musicians. They combine hardcore music with classical sounding compositions. Violins and delicate guitar sections meet up with blaring riffs, crushing drums, and screamed vocals. It is a unique formula, and it's a formula that works extremely well.
The compositions and layouts of each song are very well done, and well performed. Every song starts off with a slow build up of violins, then quiet electric guitars come into the picture. Eventually, things hit an intense climax, the lead vocalist belts scream after unintelligible scream. On top of all the insane concepts that So Hideous, My Love has been using so far, the lead vocalist uses his voice as more of an instrument. He screams notes, at least that's how it sounds. If he is screaming words, they are difficult to discern, aside from what appears to be," Left right, left, left, right." in the song entitled: Lock and Key. Every instrument is talking to another instrument, while the vocalist almost dictates the entire orchestra of modern and classical instruments with his cries of pain. Nothing is out of place.
Within every single song you have a brilliant use of layering. The violins that start the song find themselves at the very bottom of the stack, then on top of them the quiet electric guitars, then the louder electric guitars, then the pulsating drums, then the vocalist sits at the very top.
The thing that I love most about So Hideous, My Love, apart from their unique musical style, is the emotion of the singer. Some of his yells are drawn out, long, and agonizing. Others are quick, short, and reflect a sort of sharp pain. It's brilliant. The crazy thing about So Hideous, My Love is the fact that this is their first release. Most bands could not even dream of sounding this incredible by the end of their career. However, So Hideous, My Love manages to pull off sounding perfect on their first release.
Though this EP is short, (clocking in at only 15:38) and there are only three songs on the album, it's clear that So Hideous, My Love has immense talent.
This is staggeringly beautiful, and I'm not kidding. Pick it up. It's entirely free. It's entirely worth it.

this sounds great, but really, classical and hardcore aren't two complete opposites

It is a great EP.
Really? Then what would the opposite of classical be? I'll edit that part out if they're not complete opposites.

This same thing is what So Hideous, My Love has accomplished. They have combined classical music and hardcore.
Make it "has accomplished: they have combined..."
Incredibly enough, this band pulls it off extremely well.
At first, I was turned off by the concept of classical-like music combined with hardcore. However, as soon as I began to listen to their music, I was convinced that this was one of the most unique and remarkable bands that I had ever heard.
What So Hideous, My Love does so well is perfecting their blend between classical music and hardcore.
Essentially, you repeat the same idea three or four times. If I were you, I'd edit out the last sentence, at the least, to avoid redundancy.
Still, very good review that, once again, convinced me to check this out.
| | | Well, I don't think there is an "opposite" of classical because its movements, chord progressions, themes, etc. are used in almost every type of music. For example, death metal is HEAVILY influenced by classical music, even if the two sound like polar opposites.
| | | " He screams notes, not words"
explain this. it sounds like he's screaming words to me

Thanks for the advice. I'll edit it up lol.
Check it out though, it's good stuff lol.
And BigTuna, I gotcha there, that makes sense. So, essentially, the opposite of classical music would be something completely unstructured... Which almost doesn't exist. I'll fix it up.

There we go, fixed it up.
Thanks again for pointing out what the problems were.
| | | cool, EP is a good listen so far
| | | Album Rating: 4.5
Glad you like it.

Looks much better now. EP is interesting so far, not sure just how much I like it, but this is certainly pretty creative.
| | | Album Rating: 4.5
Thanks. Haha.
Yup, it takes some getting used to. I hated it on my first listen, it kinda grew on me...
| | | huh... will check this out. brisk review bro.
| | | don't know how creative this actually is; sounds like a lot of post-metal
that being said, it's still good
| | | Is this like The Pax Cecilia, yes or no? If yes, I probably won't check this out.
| | | no, it's not
| | | Album Rating: 4.5
Ah, it's got a post-metal aspect, yeah, that's why I like it lol. But, it's not entirely post-metal, it's got lots of other influences in it.
Lol and no, it's not like The Pax Cecilia.

Nothing like The Pax Cecilia, this is actually good.
I've still got to get some post-metal, all I have so far Neurosis.
| | | Sound interesting, will acquire. And also you can download it for free on their myspace.
| | | Album Rating: 4.5
Neurosis is good stuff though.
Yup, it is, that's where I got it. I was gonna mention that in the review, but I figured if people looked them up, they'd see that on their myspace anyways.
