Sorry for the mistaken aritist I had it backwards.
This album has a more relaxed feel than the rest of Patton’s work. This is a very haunting listen. I suggest if you listen for the first time go in a dark room alone at night and listen. Just sit and listen. You will be surprised how such simple music can be so haunting.
Invocations- Quite possibly my favorite track on the album. This song is simply amazing…I can’t even describe it. Listen to this if you can.
PitieÌ? Pour Mes Larmes- This is a romance song as the album title suggest. Opening up with a much happier sounding intro on the piano than Invocations, this songs overall feel is happier. This song is repetitive but in a very effective way. The mood doesn’t change very often and a very relaxing feel.
Aubade- This song starts off with a soothing feel, Patton sings lyricalessly (?) as he does much on this album. The song slowly mosi’s it’s way to a more haunting feel and then back to a soothing feel. This song could be split into a few different parts if they wanted to. At a little more than halfway through the song, Patton has one of the most effectively used screams I have ever heard. It changes the atmosphere to a very fearful one. It is placed and sung perfectly. The song ends with some very eerie oohs and a really fitting guitar riff.
L’absent- Aubade flows perfectly into this song. A quiet guitar intro with some knocking on a wood block until the drum comes in. Such a simplistic intro but such an effective one. I am not sure what effect the guitar has when the vocals come in (if there is an effect) but it compliments the singing perfectly. Then back into the intro chords and drums which I love. Followed by a much larger feeling outro.
CreÌ?puscule- A keyboard/whistling intro. This song has one of the most ominous atmospheres that I have heard in a while. After about 2:30 it relieves you of being panic stricken for about 25 seconds, when suddenly you are back in that room, feeling terrified.
Viens, Les Gazons Sont Verts- This album has absolutely flawless transitions and can keep the mood of the last song carried over. This song utilizes the harmonic which is strange in this type of music, but it manages to fit. This song has many mood changes, happy, sad, relieved. Listen and see what you think on this track.
Seule- Another romance song and this and PitieÌ? Pour Mes Larmes are the only tracks on this album with lyrics. Patton writes some very good lyrics/vocal melodies on this and the melodies venture far from what Patton usually does. This song is also one of my favorites. I believe they use brass instruments or something to simulate brass instruments all throughout this song but it is all amazing. Today this is my world!
PenseÌ?e Des Morts- This song slightly reminds me of being in a factory that is haunted because they use a xylophone (I believe) and have these voices that remind me of ghost’s moaning. It has a very industrial feel to it some places but not a very heavy industrial feel. There is a short break and you hear a more uplifting passage in the middle of the track but it goes right back to that same feeling.
Nuit Silencieuse- The bass in this song reminds me of Sunn O))). This track has a very slow and droning feel to it. It compliments the rest of the album. Patton’s voice (if it’s his) at the end sounds very very out of character for him.
This album is a masterpiece. Absolute masterpiece. Everything on this album is PERFECT. I don’t think it could have been done better. 5/5
