Review Summary: Enjoyable.
If nothing else I hope to at least give a good starting point to those looking into post rock. While Moving Mountains aren't completely post rock I find this demo to be easy to get through from start to finish. Not something that you're always willing to do with albums of the genre. The most standout aspect of the group is that unlike many post rock bands they do use various vocal sequences. While some of the lyrics are nice I myself find the vocals of questionable quality.
"8105" would probably hold the biggest annoyance in regards to the vocals. They are neither fitting nor necessary and take away what is an otherwise exceptional track. Opening in a warm, welcoming fashion recalling some sort of fairytale forest. The guitar layers are dynamic and winding, portraying a pleasant sound scape throughout. However none of the songs are ever quite perfect.
"Perihelion" starts off slow before building up into a climax, crashing in a wall of sound.. Sound like any other bands of the sort?
"Xandu" seems to make things sound a bit more original though. Fluttering around in semi-static ambiance for the first few minutes before shifting into a simple, yet wonderful chimes of a very happy feeling guitar. And if there is one thing that can be said about this demo it's that it has a pleasant theme.
"Alastika" quickly layers the jangles masterfully, always being a bit swifter to the point than other bands. Yet it might be in its "easy to stomach" vibe that prevents the demo from carrying any lasting appeal.
"Sol Solice" ends the album with a folky acoustic number, the vocals this time making a full and more fitting display. However I feel that all of the vocals should have been left out, that the band can create much more captivating music without. In the end this is still only a demo of little importance. Whether you find something you enjoy here or something you can't stand Moving Mountains are something a bit different to check out.
