Review Summary: Don't fear the Greeks and their gifts

If “Kydoimos” were to become a picture it would be the black and white capture of the battle warcry, as Kawir with the 9th album dive into the thick darkness of their music, to suffocate every crack of light.

From the first beat of “Teiresias”, the listener is confronted with the ancient Greek barrage of the veterans’ black/pagan metal, who built compositions that perfectly combine the uncontrolled, chaotic speeds of hellish drums with the stressful, nightmarish riffs that keep the melody captive, to release it in small doses, like poison.

The feeling that prevails during the album is like being out of breath for 52 minutes and looking for a way to escape from the maelstrom of battle. The more you try to escape, the more you sink into your instinctive reactions, as revealed in the hypnotic and simultaneously mesmerizing “Centauromachy” where you have now surrendered to the moods of the Kawir without realizing it. So far, the sound of “Kydoimos” unfolds with such a special use of Greek language and lyrics, carrying all the Greek black metal heritage within it, as it once again opens the Pandora’s box that Bathory brought us.

From “Hecatonchires” onwards however, Kawir step into the void, to face their destiny, following their own path in the dark. The continuity is simply stunning, especially in “Achilles and Hector” and “Hector’s Funeral”, where the ideal balance of lyricism and power, epic and roughness is achieved. The story that has moved the world for centuries takes on flesh and blood through the cinematic vision of Kawir, who once again paint the great heroes of antiquity against a black and white background. And if the climax of the epic is now behind us, the darkness settles for good with the album’s grand closing of the masterful self-titled 7-minute “Kydoimos” and the closing poem “War is the Father of All”, with its timeless theme.

We would be committing a blasphemy if we did not give a special mention to Agisilaos’ thunderous drumming, which literally mobilizes the entire sonic edifice of Kawir, unleashing all the dynamics of the very well-crafted compositions, which easily stay in the listener’s mind. The vocals of Porphyrion and Therthonax alternate from demonic to epic screams to give the variety and theatrics befitting Kawir’s sonic canvas. “Kydoimos” should be experienced as a wholesome opus, from the first raindrops of the album, to the chirping of the bird that marks the end.

The Greek black metal scene continues to be full of surprises and gifts, it is an inexhaustible source of inspiration and creation that every year is activated in every direction. “Kydoimos” is the Kawir’s turn to draw from it, to pour into battle and win it. We now have an ancient Greek metal epic on our hands, probably Kawir’s best album and one of the best of the scene.

Solid review that would benefit from some minor proofreading, pos.

This sounds like Kawir's closest venture to death metal.

That said, I'm not a big fan of the way drums sound.

Surmising from the song titles, this looks like a concept based on the Iliad.

They're putting their riff arsenal even more in the front. Kinda prefer the productions of a couple of previous recent albums, other than that a great listen

I think I never heard from this band but the review got me interested. I like some of the greek extreme metal scene bands a lot. Which bands would you name that compare in sound with Kawir?

They really don't sound similar to other Greek bm bands they're more in line with something like Primordial or Nechochwen.

@Frost15

Try Bathory, try Varathron, try Macabre Omen, try Agatus and still they have got a thing of their own going on

@Hawks

Yes Primordial is a good one, more of their earlier releases as a similarity. Don't forget though that Kawir exists from 1993

Huge Bathory fan, not much of a Varathron fan and never tried Macabre Omen or Agatus. I'm very glad Nechochwen was mentioned cause I forgot about them long ago and I always wanted to check their music!

I'm listening to Isotheos, which is this band's best rated record everywhere it seems, but I've read it's very different from their other albums. So far I'm liking it, although nothing extraordinary. It sounds a bit like Istapp. I'm getting Draugnim vibes too from that album.

PS: Ok, that Isotheos album is pretty good. I'm giving it a 4. Love the folk-ish, meloblack with pagan tinges.

Isotheos is their best album, and the comment about the drums of the new album, is based on the totally balanced sound of the instrument in Isotheos

I decided to go into this one after finishing Isotheos and I'm with Voivod. The drums sound weird, like something went loose during the mixing process. Will give it a full spin later but first two songs did not convince me as much as any song in Isotheos.

Early Kawir are to me the southern equivalent of early Enslaved, up to Eld. Not that it's the same sound, but the feel is the same, each representing their own ancient folklore.

Isotheos is like To the Nameless Dead. They kinda did the same as always, but that time it was close to perfect.

Very nice way to put it Night. I really enjoyed Isotheos, and I've listened to a lot of albums in that vein, but very few convinced me as much. Unsurprisingly I love Enslaved and Primordial a lot, like they are both fav bands of mine.
