Review Summary: blistering power metal
This 2023 release is like the power metal of old. Rather than overly compressed, auto-tuned vox leading the way, their sound is visceral and raw. On high notes these vocals may hit the ear drums in foreign ways, and hurt. Take the picture as a whole, and it’s purely impressive. With the force and confidence of a legend, the vocalist strikes forth with the exact level of pinache you’d expect from a retro aesthetic power metal band. Multiple moments took me aback to regroup after the powerful vocal performances. Catchy choruses are lit up with angelic sunshine, and the energy is unescapable. Energetic all around, and a massive kickstarter for your morning.
Speaking of energy, the guitarist is tireless. A speed metal tag is on this album, because the guitar fingers are more active than a grandma on bingo night. Betwixt endless shreds, and hair raising vocals this is certainly power metal. It’s also basic power power. Synthesizers are barely alive in the mix, and symphonic elements are not detectable. The album has the bluster, but none of the extra paints. They make it work, but aside from boisterous vocals, it’s not the prettiest album.
One last annoyance is the mix. The vocals are loud, and also loud in the mix. Occasionally, the high vocal notes get annoying. Not to mention that there’s no room to relax for a second. The riff stompers start and don’t stop. If you don’t like the singer’s voice you’re doomed to hate this album.
The band’s confidence ultimately wins the day. The vocals are mesmerizing, and the riffs give bumpy, groovy slaps. A surprising amount of memorable choruses are included too! It’s a strong batch of songs, from strong musicians. Well done all around, but also missing something.
