Review Summary: Smoking big ole big doinks before the battle.
Trollwald is a very interesting band. Looking at their name and the album cover for their self-titled debut album, you'd probably think this was a cheesy folk metal album, and you'd be half right.
Let me start by saying I've never quite heard anything like this album. Yes, Trollwald is a folk metal band...but they have nothing cheesy about them and they mix their folk with GUT PUNCHING STONER METAL RIFFS! That's right folks these guys mix folk metal, fully equipped with bagpipes, together with a riff heavy, and at times straight-up filthy, stoner metal sound that makes you feel like you're jamming a fucking Bongzilla album. I mentioned bagpipes and you might laugh, but they actually contrast perfectly with the many fantastic riffs througout this journey.
The combination might not sound appealing to you and I get it. I scoffed at the thought honestly....but then I hit play and that all went away. Trollwald have carved a unique niche in the current metal scene and this album is just the beginning.
