Review Summary: A slightly-above-average split by two legendary emo bands.

Pageninetynine (pg. 99) and City of Caterpillar were two legendary emo/screamo bands of the late 90s and early 00s. This split was released after what many consider to be pg. 99’s best work, document 8, and before City of Caterpillar’s self-titled, their only full-length. At the time, they shared multiple members, most notably both vocalists. As a result, the two bands’ contributions sound very similar.

Now after that paragraph extolling the prodigious talent of both bands, you’d think that this split would be spectacular. Well, not quite. pg. 99’s contribution is the final two songs off of their aforementioned magnum opus, document 8. Yes, they are amazing songs, but if you already own document 8 the pg. 99 half of this record is essentially useless.

City of Caterpillar’s songs are unique to this record, quite thankfully, and are both great representations of City’s sound. The vocals are quite possibly the best part of this record, absolutely dripping with emotion. However, that isn’t to say that the instrumentation is bad. It is above average, and makes for an enjoyable listen.

This split is only truly recommended if you are attempting to collect all the documents, or if you want to hear some of City’s work prior to their full-length.

Sort of dumb to put songs from a full length on a split.

I see that you don't like new material on releases. Maybe the next Circle Takes the Square album will just be ATRU again.

not really sure what to think your opinion on any of this is. IMO, you shouldn't just ignore the two pg.99 songs on here because they're on doc 8. IIRC they were only on the re-release for doc 8 so some people may not have heard these even if they have heard document 8. But i think you should give them some description since they're part of this release whether people have heard them or not.

Also in your 3rd paragraph i couldn't tell if you thought the CoC songs were spectacular or if they were merely enjoyable.

Sorry if I sound negative, not trying to be just want to share my opinion on these things. i'm really glad to see a review for this, Ive always wanted to know more about some of the pg 99 releases besides just 5 and 8.

Thanks for the feedback! I'm planning to review some of these un-reviewed pg. 99 releases so you'll get some opinions TMobo.

I really appreciate the criticism.

City's part is superior in so many ways. Pg. 99 was meh, better on Document #8

Ok. i created this bullshit account to set things straight here. the two songs on the PG. 99 split were included at the end of the RE-RELEASE of Document #8. the ORIGINAL didn't include them. so they didn't just pull songs off an album to throw on this split.

and as much as both of these bands rule City of Caterpillar wins on this recording. it isn't the best split ever but, if you can find it, the artwork alone is a reason to buy it. i mean, look at shit
