Review Summary: What is dream metal? Asking for a friend...

Spaceships’ Bandcamp profile uses the phrase “dream metal” to describe the South Bend, Indiana collective’s music. Sure, “dream metal” might just be one of those seemingly nonsensical imaginary genres which gets name-dropped by plenty of obscure bands in an attempt to get noticed, but in this case, it proves rather apt. Spaceships’ most recent LP (Ruins), might be best characterized as a cross between Holy Fawn’s blackened shoegaze and mewithoutYou’s distinctive confluence of gentle indie rock with frantic post-hardcore. These comparisons may be a bit reductive, but they’ll at least get you in the ballpark. Ruins is a sonic adventure, composed of eight mostly-lengthy expeditions, which together encompass all the genres mentioned in my last sentence (plus plenty more), while remaining a generally coherent organism. Of particular delight are the journey from calm to absolutely volcanic eruption in opener "Spillt" and the steady propulsion which drives closer "Mumbling", but milder moments like the melodic "Shared Graves" shouldn't be overlooked either. Sometimes heavy, sometimes beautiful, always engaging, Spaceships’ latest album showcases an underground group meriting much broader exposure.

I'm glad someone did this. I was working on a review off and on for weeks and just couldn't succinctly describe the combination of gaze/shimmer, heaviness/messiness, and lyrical depth. Album is great, and "Measure" is off the charts.

Cheers! Yeah, this is one of those albums which is quite hard to describe if you really want to delve deeply into it. In this case, just figured a very brief description saying "yeah, it's great" would get a few more people to check it out.

nice

peeped the opener from this and didn't massively click with it, but my main reaction was that these guys' approach has a lot more going for it than the majority of nugazers. Holy Fawn are a dec reference, as are Kairon IRSE! and maybe Coaltar of the Deepers if you go further back. will check the rest soon

These guys are friends! Glad they got a review.
The mewithoutYou influence is heavy here. Spaceships' singer was a part of this mewithoutYou cover set a few years ago: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o9sJdpt7I4E

I don't think of this as metal tbh, maybe I'm wrong. To me it sounds like dreamy post-hardcore, like Thrice or mwY or even Colour Revolt got way more atmospheric. Post-Dreamcore?
