Review Summary: As heavy as regret.

Therapy? is one of those bands who managed to define their sound from early on in their career. Small missteps occurred along the way, yet each record remained anchored in a recognizable and ultimately trademarked sound. Lately, the Northern Irish trio returned to the concise, punk rock oriented material that harkens to their ‘90s era. Cleave packed a punch, blending powerful riffs with melodic choruses without overstaying its welcome. Hard Cold Fire follows in its footsteps, offering a half hour of discontent you can headbang and sing along to. Andy Cairns successfully sprinkled his cynicism and pessimism regarding the political, social and environmental issues over these tunes as well. Some of them hit harder, such as the swinging groove of “Bewildered Herd” or the pounding “To Disappear”. Both share busy drumming, especially the latter where they easily became the driving force. Other highlights include the gritty opener “They Shoot the Terrible Master”, plus the high octane, catchy “Woe”, where Cairns’ melodies nicely contrast the sharp guitars and distorted bass lines. None of them break any new ground for the act, however, they are really tight songs overall. “Poundland of Hope and Glory” enters the same category with its smooth low end bass and glorious power chords. What further helps these ditties is the clear yet powerful production. The instruments sound as if they play together in a room, whereas on Cleave there were disjointed moments and weird mixing. Thankfully, Hard Cold Fire is another successful entry in the Therapy? catalog. Thirty four years into their career, this is quite an accomplishment.

Basically a glorified sound off, but the album is great and shouldn't go unnoticed. Nothing new for Therapy?, just good songs.

Definitely check Troublegum and Infernal Love.

I don't know what it is but I couldn't get into any other album from these guys after those two, this included.

It's a shame I have only listened to Troublegum from these guys.

Will check.

They have a fair number of great albums in their discography. Noise rock was perhaps more apparent in their sound in the 90s stuff. Their ratings on Sputnik are mostly accurate if you want to check other albums.

That's precisely why it's a shame on my part haha, and yeah, these guys never released anything bad.

I got into them with Disquiet, which is one great, catchy record IMO. Then I went back to older stuff and kept following their releases since then. A Brief Crack of Light is another favorite, same with Semi-Detached.

Still haven't heard this in full. I regularly return to Troublegum and Semi-Detached. Nice review.

Somehow I have never checked out this band despite being aware of their existence since the early '90s. This is awesome and I have some digging to do

Strong 3.5 and a top five Therapy? album.

The production FINALLY sounds good again.

Couple of ‘less good’ songs second half hold it back a tiny bit.

Pleasant surprise this one

Anyone new to Therapy? - as much as I love this EVERY song on ‘Troublegum’ is better than every song here.

It’s a 14 song album.

Man you have to just love a power trio that can bring it much less bring it for 30 years
