Review Summary: I'll make you love me.

If you were online enough at the time (and let’s face it, most people reading this were), then the musical landscape of the 2020 pandemic became synonymous with the rise of ‘hyperpop’ as it transitioned from niche evolution of the similarly vague deconstructed club scene to the all-encompassing DIY explosion of greasy teenage bedroom producers creating electronic pop music drawing from every possible influence you could imagine, whether those be critically acclaimed or reviled by all with memories long enough to remember their original incarnations. It was this dismissal of so-called ‘taste’ that made hyperpop unique and so authentically personal to the lives, identities and unrefined palates of its creators, and one that has now been unfortunately hijacked by major labels, much like everything else that dares to speak in a new and exciting way.

Let’s Hope Heteros Fail, Learn, and Retire (iconic title aside), feels like a refreshing return to the carefree, ***-your-labels experimentation that rendered the original ‘movement’ so interesting. Rich bitch anthem Come 2 Brazil’s trapped out take on trancey industrial techno aesthetics comes complete with shiny Berghain-ready monotonous-yet-hypnotic vocals. Make U 3 Me alternates between Slipknot and Kero Kero Bonito if they were addicted to Osu!. Hëłlœ Kįttÿ’s bizarro mix of art punk, polka and funk metal hits like a adderall-addicted Mr. Bungle, and is immediately followed by .Sex, which opens up with radio-friendly nineties alt-rock guitar before giving way to rave-ready alternating electro house and drum and bass sections. Did I mention all of these tracks run under three minutes?

If you are left wtf-ing at these descriptions, that’s kinda the point. Let’s Hope… is unfiltered, unabashed, and unconcerned with subjective concepts of genre boundaries or taste. It is raw, it is exciting, and it is unrepentant in its mission to defy your comfort in normality. No, the vast majority of people are not going to get this, or even concede that there is much to ‘get’ in the first place. But consider this a pleb filter of sorts, for those who claim to want to smash boundaries and gatekeepers yet only flock to the frontlines when the battle is already won, when major labels have commercialised the ground paved by those with real artistry and real vision. This is what the term ‘hyperpop’ once meant to me, and to see it still being realised is a breath of fresh, sweaty air amidst the stale sanitised stench of corporate boardrooms pretending to be just like you and me..

Or TLDR: this *** goes hard.

Recommended tracks: Come 2 Brazil, Make U 3 Me, Hëłlœ Kįttÿ, .Sex.

fun review to write which turned into a bit of a rant, but genuinely think alice is one of the most unique and forward-thinking artists around and xe is due a mainstream breakthorugh at some point

if you have the time also check legend, the collab with alice glass from a couple years back, absolutely ridiculous bop

What does the album title mean by “retire” ? Retire from making music? Retire from existing?

was lucky enough to catch Alice opening up for Rebecca Black last year. This lil EP goes fuckin hard as hell. Hello Kitty is such a goddamn bop and a wonderful mashup of so many genres. Definitely an artist to keep an eye out for, they could go far

Eh, kind of over this type of gimmick with artists, but I might check this song out at the very least. Overall doesn't sound like anything I'd be into at this stage in my life though.

Might take a bit for a response. I imagine she’d have to read it a few times to figure out what’s going on

I'm sure that others will disagree, but I actually think for as whacky and bizarre as this EP is it doesn't fall into being gimmicky all that much. It's super playful and has a few XD ZANY moments, for sure, but at its core these songs are pretty well constructed with hooks and melodies that could work in a ton of different genres. Alice just happens to be willing to try out a lot of them.

It read to me like Poppy and Bring Me The Horizon made some horrible maybe good songs together.

i don't think lack of comprehension has previously been a barrier for her lol

super agreed, it's largely very cohesive on a track by track basis that the wealth of different styles betrays, rather than just throwing stuff at a wall

not me refusing to mention the oli sykes feature! i think it's a lot more varied and electronic than that description implies, but certainly fans of that sort of style should give it a try

this review good

this album terrible but the Monk to .Sex run saved it from a 1 lol

tbqh, re. "for those who claim to want to smash boundaries", I think the difference between Hello Kitty and Believe The Hype is about as good an illustration as any of the difference between proper cracked inspo hours and arbitrary pastiche of individually derivative components that sound good neither alone nor together. someone should write more about this re. gen z no-filter music maybe
