You two obviously haven?t suffered heartbreak as adults. And I?m not talking 20 yr old my gf just left me because I have too many empty Cheetos bags on my couch, I?m talking adult style build your entire life around some other person only to have your heart ripped from your soul style heart break. But yeah, dad rock, whatever. ??

A nice album, just a little long and a bit too samey in places. Easy to switch off in a few places but still certainly worth your time and attention.

The production aesthetic on this is definitely the most interesting for a C&C record since Little Hell and everything feels sonically linked and cohesive, and despite some ambitious songwriting ideas, it still often feels like by-the-numbers post-Little Hell C&C with Dallas continuing to write similar vocal melodies and dad rock lyrics.

After 3 spins, maybe a 3.8-ish. Better than the last, but not on the same level as Little Hell or the first ones.

Diving back into his bluesy side, The Love Still Held Me Near feels like more of a follow up to If I Should Go Before You than Pill for Loneliness, and while I don't find it quite as compelling as IISGBY, it is still a very nice slice of C&C. It comes along with Dallas' always gorgeous one-of-kind voice and a lot of emotional lyrics about love and loss, many specifically relating to the recent death of one of his long time friends.

Agree, I think the 'dad rock' reference is a bit too easy of a throw away criticism. It's got more substance than that. This is a pretty good album, pretty consistent, I particularly love The Water is Coming. It isn't as varied as Little Hell, but its still pretty strong.
