Review Summary: Joke AOTY?

According to the news on Sputnikmusic announcing Now Everybody—, “The band wanted to stay true to their pop punk/black metal roots”. Strangely enough, there isn’t that much resemblance to pop punk, just a taste really, a surface coating. The tracks also transition between indie rock, pop punk, and black metal with no warning. That, sax solos, some lovely piano, and other goofball surprises await you in conjunction with this work of abstract art. Surprisingly, the completely jarring, and juxtaposed elements are beautifully interwoven in a masterful tapestry — just kidding. Still, there’s enough improvements on their original sound to suggest that this band may one day make a completely serious album. I won’t hold my breath though.

This album is a farce, a complete joke on the audience that also comes with some good music. While you can’t expect jazz in the track Jazz Song for Pizzamachine to Review you can expect to be entertained with twists and turns applied generously. The same can be said about the album, which a lacks a sole, defining feature to tie all loose ends together. The only truly consistent motif is the occasional divergence into black metal sections. The songwriting is indeed questionable, and the curiosities continue until the end of the album.

Instrumentally, this debut album is vastly better than their previous EP. Black metal segments are better thought out, with better riffs, drums, and shrieks. On top of that, the production is great, and the clean vocals are also improved. The band are clearly talented, especially the pianist who could rival the keyboardist in Trans-Siberian Orchestra. Not bad for a joke band.

While their previous EP had me more concerned, Ménage A Un are on the right path. Songs are completely listenable, and often have fairly pleasant, relaxing melodies. If the band can focus on more cohesive songwriting in the future, there may be no stopping them from creating a great album. As for now, this latest release is as fun as it is a complete gong show. Come in with a sense of humour and you will leave unscathed.

Also, nice rating distribution, seems like it's becoming a recurring theme.

Why thank you! Glad to hear you had fun, we wanted to make the least boring music possible.

We're releasing some more music in 2024 and we'll call it quits right after that, we feel that this specific project is slowly reaching its natural conclusion. In the meantime, thank you for giving us some of your time!
