4.5 superb | Klekticist | November 30th 22 | ben monder is great, that's how i found this album. if you like twin peaks soundtrack, listen to this. many of the saxophone motifs are incredibly catchy. "stygian pools" reminds me of metal such as animals as leaders, meshuggah, or cloudkicker with the 2-2-2-3 rhythm and the unison, fast arpeggiating sax/guitar lines. this is a technical and listenable album.

2.5 average | Gene Gol-Jonsson CONTRIBUTOR | October 6th 22 | The Bad Plus' newest is not so much a reintroduction, as the album's eponymous title may lead some to believe, as much as it is an attempt at reinvention. The results are quite uncertain, with most of their ambient-to-soft experiments ending up somewhat too airy and distant. I cannot quite put my finger on what this album does right, as it mostly comes off as a late-night, tired jam session, with barely enough energy to support a Spotify algorithm playlist for sleeping well.

2.0 poor | ajcollins15 | October 5th 22 | The long-time running sextet from Minneapolis comes through with more of the same jazz fusions and post-bop they have been known for the last few releases and although the album is fine, it is forgettable and not all that interesting to sit through. Today there are a lot more interesting ideas coming out of jazz (Sons of Kemet, The Comet is Coming, Floating Points, Kamasi Washington, and even fusions into hip hop with BADBADNOTGOOD and metal with Neptunian Maximalism) it?s hard not to think about how you would rather be listening to those.
