<font size="2"><p>Pardon me if this is a bit choppy and awkward but it's my first review and i'm still trying to get a feel for the formating of it. </p><p>As debatable as it may be; I would just like to start off by saying in my personal opinion this is by far the Haunted’s best release. It’s obvious that these guys are passionate about what they do and that they wanna get it right the first time. Though not quite as melodic as their other albums this is by far the most brutal of them all. It’s one long strain of anger and obscenities. From start to finish it never lets you off the edge of your seat as the thrashing just doesn’t end. </p><p>Musically it is entirely driven off of varying high speed tempos and awkward palm muting rhythms but somehow they pull it off. The guitarists do a great job of feeding off of each other with them both essentially performing dueling lead lines. The guitars are blazingly fast and at times melodic and epic with constantly varying verse and chorus riffs. They sound much like At The Gates but on speed and having roid rage (not surprising as this band is the bastard child of At The Gates). The only bad thing about the guitar work though is that since the verse and chorus guitar lines are so intense and involved there are a lack of solos, granted they are still there but they’re very rare. </p><p>The vocal department is weird yet good. Peter Dolving can scream with the best of them with a nice metal scream yet he still has some punk overtones, a rather nice yet weird mixture. Dolving’s voice really brings it to life though. His scream has an intensity and controlled pitch/tone to it that’s hard to be matched by many vocalists nowadays. Lyrically though this album is good but not necessarily great. I mean, don’t get me wrong it has some amazing lines but there’s only so much you can say about killing people and fighting off social injustice in the form of a zombie. Some of the amazing lines he pulls out though are:</p><p>A candle it flickers before my eyes.<br />I feel so at ease as I start to realize.<br />No more frustration as the thought frees my mind.<br />I blow out the candle, one last good bye...<br />-In Vein</p><p>You ***ing maggots,<br />don't crawl for me I'm not your friend.<br />Spare me your bull***,<br />you animals with human eyes.<br />-Choke Hold</p><p>Crowbar my tool of trade.<br />Duct-tape and a six inch switchblade.<br />My love is a Stanley-knife.<br />My love is the fear in your eyes.<br />-Bullet Hole</p><p>Overall this is a great release. It’s fast, intense, brutal, and memorable. This isn’t like most of the other garbage being put out today where you listen to it once for novelty and then put it away with the rest of your CDs that you listened to once and forgot about. It’s full of intricate moments and if you’re a musician I garuntee you that you’ll look at their playing in awe and respect how basic yet intricate their playing is. If you like any kind of thrash you’ll like this, if you like death metal you’ll love it, if you like melodic metal it’s got just enough melody and harmonies enough to keep you interested, all round this is just a great album and I can’t think of any better way to put it.</p></font>

I understand bands can have humble beginnings, but this really is one of the most stale and average melodic thrash debuts I've ever heard. Some of the guitar work here and there demonstrates moments of greatness, but when the songwriting is so predictable and lifeless, such instrumental aspects don't really matter. At a stretch I'd say the album's first few tracks are the best, but that's not saying much given they do practically the same thing as the rest of the album.

Save a couple tracks, this album is a ripper from start to finish. Probably still up there with my favorite of theirs, alongside the Dead Eye and rEVOLVEr. Never really liked the Aro stuff as much, even though The Haunted Made Me Do It is a pretty killer record. I know this will get dunked on, but this album was a very important part of my musical upbringing and I still absolutely love Dolving's vocals.
