In 1960, The Miles Davis quintet was in a transitional period, right between playing over given chord patterns and improvising more freely over scales, the so-called "modal" approach. Miles had started the latter with this album "Kind of Blue" in 1959, and John Coltrane would develop it further with his quintet in the 'sixties.rThe Stockholm concerts of March 22, 1960, were played by the Davis quintet at its height, only a few weeks before John Coltrane left to start out his own.rMiles Davis' trumpet is irresistible as ever; his playing is warm, intense, and often aggressive, but Lohnmann does a very good job explaining the history and evolution of these Jazz giants, and how Miles was able to conduct such experience that is now available for everyone to enjoy
