Release Date: 2008 | Tracklist

Motions of The Spinning Black Sun is a recording by power electronics act 88MM. I can't find a hell of a lot of information on the project, apart from an inclusion of the Satanic Skinhead Propaganda’s Declaration Of Anti-Semetic Terror compilation and a split with the artist Deathkey, but that only adds to the mystery that surrounds this release which came out of nowhere in 2008.

This is perhaps one of the most unique noise recordings I have ever heard, one of the first things that comes to mind describing it is that if Tangerine Dream were to take a foray into the realm of power electronics and death industrial this might just the result. Indeed, it is full of repetitive analogue moog sequencing which is breath of fresh air in a genre that can often be accused of being stale, but unlike Tangerine Dream this has a much darker and sinister air about it due to the harsh rhythmic frequencies present throughout.

Sequence Manipulation I (Motions of the Spinning Black Sun) sets the scene, with it's warped pulsing electronics and samples of German soldier rallies it presents a hypnotic contrast of which following track Behold...For the Universe is Ours is similar to, but with more of an ambient air about it. M104 is where the true strengths of the album present itself, it's rhythmic loop and samples nothing short of perfection. Sequence Manipulation II (Radio Waves Wave Goodbye) returns to the layered synths of it's first part, beginning with the sample "This is London court, here with news. The German radio has just announced that Hitler is dead". After this, the album takes a turn for the useless with 82 tracks of 8 seconds silence, followed by the true highlight of Motions of The Spinning Black Sun, simply known as Untitled. This is perhaps one of the most sinister recordings i've ever heard, as a sample of a concentration camp victim recounts his story "Then we shouted give us some water, we are thirsty. And we heard crying back... you damn jews. Didn't they kill you yet?". The music is a perfect intensifier of this, and builds up from humble beginnings to a truly disturbing concoction of noise frequencies and electronics.

Motions of The Spinning Black Sun is perhaps one of the best power electronics recordings to come out over the past few years, making itself distinctive enough to provide a level variety to the genre but not abandoning its roots in subversive noise terror. It is short, and the inclusion of silent tracks is ridiculous but apart from this it a perfect length which is just enough to execute 20 minutes or so of some of the most hypnotic sound experiments I have ever heard.

That is actually user l334 h4x0r's youtube account (currently posting on the forum under what must be his hundredth alt, probably after being banned for racism again).

I wouldn't take the fascist angle too seriously, a lot of power electronics artists just do it for shock value. It creates a nice ambiguity a lot of the time, I find.

Definitely give it a shot, I don't know how you go with noise music but the electronic elements might interest you enough to give it more than a cursory listen.

These industrial subgenres not very popular around these parts. Still, I regularly fill these gaps nobody gives a fuck about.

Yeah, I didn't think it would be. Each to their own though. ;)

good review man, but I listened to that link you posted and I'm in the same boat as Zettel - it left me pretty cold. Noise music isn't usually for me anyway, though, so all's good.

I'll admit it's not my most loved genre but there's a few artists within that I quite dig

I haven't heard it yet. For a couple of decent power electronics compilations check out Break Your Face (2004) and Addiction (2009).

What have you heard? My current shortlist of essentials -

Brethren - Savage Inequalities
Brighter Death Now - Obsessis, Innerwar
Genocide Organ - Leichenlinie
Maurizio Bianchi - Industrial Tape, Mectpyo Blut
Prurient - Black Vase, Shipwrecker's Diary
RJF - Greater Success In Apprehension & Convictions
Whitehouse - Great White Death

Give these a listen at some point if you haven't, you are bound to find something you like.

How do you mean?

This is labeled as industrial on here. I couldn't imagine too many people grouping this in with metal bands, unless you are of the "metal is just noise" persuasion. ;)

Hmmm, let's see...

Brighter Death Now
Contagious Orgasm
Einstürzende Neubauten
(only their early stuff could really be considered noise though)
Fuck Buttons
Gas Chamber Orchestra
Iszoloscope
The Locust
Nihilist Spasm Band
Smegma
Theatre Of Eternal Music
(more drone than anything else)

Impressive. I like Contagious Orgasm and Einstürzende Neubauten a lot.

I am largely unfamiliar with the rest, however. I think I listened to Fuck Buttons once and it was pretty cool.

That's really the extent of it all though, i've tried a few other artists and they weren't for me
