Uggggh.. cheesy historical topic, pathetic posing, simple and straight and without rough edges...is this the North-American Amon Amarth plus "classical" synth sounds? Can this possibly not suck? Well it somehow manages not to! This is due to a certain degree of variety and - within the given parameters - very strong songwriting. rMakes for a fun listen. Just don't expect too much in depth value...
Btw: Has all the potential for being a nice opener to Nile next week, due to it's undeniable groove and catchiness, yeah!

I think this is an incredible achievement, both sonically and in terms of creating an atmosphere.

barebones symph with a lot of total filler riffs and relying on the inherent 'romanness' to make up for lack of metal, still title is fun, alesia, invictus, and final war are good with heavy editing, and the intrumental pantheon is prob the best developed track on the bum besides title

Amazing how the weakest of all 3 Ex Deo releases has a better rating here than the excellent 3rd record. You can hear in this record the recipe for greatness that would peak on the subsequent two releases, but there is something lacking here. Catchy, well written tunes. You can dress this up how much you want with a bombastic sound and a terrific production, but at the end of the day the riffs are simply dull and uninteresting, making this a chore to listen to. There is one highlight though, which is track 2 and a decent moment on track 9 but that's it. It is quite clear that the band did not yet know what to do with their trademark death metal sound and how to blend it with bombastic orchestral arrangements.
