sounds like a recording from a jam session where the whole band was off, and what the hell is
with that cowbell, jeez. At best this is a jazz improvision gone wrong and worst it's..a jazz
improvision gone wrong. Calling it now some of the more snobby folks are gonna give this 4s
and higher under the guise of "ItS AvAnT gArDe" and write a meant-to-be-taken-serious-essay
about why the cowbell is the most essential instrument that needs to be used in metal.

"Is anyone else tired of how painfully slow metal has evolved recently compared to how quickly innovations occurred at the end of the last century? think about how drastic and surprising changes were in the 5 years between 1988 and 1993, versus how stagnant metal between 2015 - 2020 has been. on Hapeleptic Overtrove, Behold the Arctopus shows the utmost respect for the true spirit of extreme metal: a musical world that should challenge the audience to listen to and think about things in new ways, while reveling in mystery, surprise and excess which is simultaneously baroque and primitive." - Fom band's Bandcamp page

Regardless of me having a lot of respect for Colin Marston as a prolific musician and producer, Behold... The Arctopus has overall been one of his most self-indulgent projects and Hapeleptic Overtrove ups the ante even more in that aspect, which is a shame because it's also one of his most abrasively experimental ones and I have generally enjoyed some of their early stuff as well. I won't deny that quite a lot of musicianship is required to be able to pull of performing music like this, but sonically these songs seldom feel that interesting or engaging. The very staccato, start-stop pacing of these tracks and seemingly improvised and random sounding drumbreaks and guitarlines that structurally don't really go anywhere just makes the music sound like a post-ironic jam session rather than a thrilling record by a group of extremely talented musicians. If these songs weren't as bare and more cohesively structured I could see myself enjoying this just like I've enjoyed plenty of other weird metal projects, but as is, these tracks just strike me as very style over substance.

Props for being very different, I guess, but this shit is pretty much unlistenable.

I specifically listened to this album because of the low ratings here, having once enjoyed some of their work when they started. I have to say... it's really not that bad. The first half of the album has random bits that sound like good ideas that never really went anywhere. The second half is structured better, but unfortunately, I would say that the drummer (who is otherwise obviously capable) specifically is bringing this project down. There're a lot of spots where it feels like there's no real impact to the beat, and he's just flipping through rudimentary cymbal shuffles with an occasional kick or snare. It mostly seems like the guitarists are carrying the weight with rhythm segmentation while the drummer just keeps the beat, which is slightly underwhelming for a style with a sense of technical extravagance to it. The triangles and cowbells in blast beats kind of seems like a joke? I honestly can't tell. But there are still a lot of parts I like here, so idk... conflicting aspects ultimately make this average.

The music doesn't ever go anywhere. It feels like every song is supposed to be an intro to something, but it begins and ends in the exact same place.
