Review Summary: Cinematic and vicious death metal

Cosmic putrefaction is a One Man Band Signed To I Voidhanger Records (This really should be its own subgenre by now). But while most of these one man bands tend to produce black metal, Cosmic Putrefaction's Gabriele Gramaglia makes burly death metal in the VEIN of Blood Incantation

Did you like the last Blood Incantation album? Statistically speaking yeah you did because everyone (me included) and their mom (mine included) put it in their top ten last year. I'm sure it must be infuriating for Gabriel to take something he made with love and care and compare it to something he might not consider an influence but I did it anyway. Because I am a professional.

And to be fair the bands are not really all that similar. There is some general overlap but but the music of Cosmic Putrefaction is not so all over the place. I am talking more about a general atmosphere. When I listen to them with closed eyes I picture black holes tearing each other apart, and nasty things happening on the Nostromo and the USG Ishimura.

This is some ugly, fast paced deathmetal that sounds like a mountain crushing a village full of orphans. The writing here is top notch. The first song Between Awe and Fear upon the Burst of the Ominous Star (yes of course we have long and pretentious titles it comes with the territorry) switches effortlesly between lightning fast tremolos, Gorguts style atonal weirdness and a super chunky breakdown with a wailing solo on top that is guaranteed to make you want to smash someone's teeth in. The vocals are earthshakingly low and the instrumental work is surprisingly technical. And the fact that one guy played all of it just makes it that much more awesome.

So if this would be all the album has to offer I would already be satisfied. Some burly death metal with great writing and instantly memorable riffs? I'm all in.

But what really sets this album apart is the atmosphere. Things are relatively straightforward on the first 3 tracks, but at the end of The Glooming Murk of His Telluric Shrieks we get a chilling ambient section with some gentle acoustic plucking that wouldnt be out of place on the score of diablo 2. From that point on all of the songs have something extra going for them that gives the music an added dimension. A dimension most likely inhabited by lizard people.

The track The Arcane Soothsayer Carefully Sculpted His Demise has an ice cold blackened section on it, accentuated by an ambient passage that flows nicely into the string section at the beginning of Utterance of the Fall of Man. The strings play a nice little melody before being absolutely obliterated by the nastiest, murkiest, slowest riff on the whole album. You know it's coming but because it is so well executed it's just satisfying.

The only bad thing I can say of this album is that it's too short at 34 minutes. It's really easy to listen to it again, not just because of the short runtime but because it's so fun. It has enough variety going on to keep your attention but not too much to be ALIENATING.

If you like your death metal fast, cavernous and oozing atmosphere then this is just what the doctor ordered. Quite simply this is one of the best death metal albums this year

Nice {for a first} first review. I've been listening to this for a while now. I have a few pointers though.

Cosmic putrefaction is a One Man Band Signed To I Voidhanger Records (This really should be its own subgenre by now).

This should be removed. A label shouldn't [ever] be catagorized as a genre, you may get away with calling a label such as Voidhangercore from time to time - but I would generally discourage this line of conversation etc.

But while most of these one man bands tend to produce black metal,

Starting a sentence with a conjunction is generally a "no-no". While it feels like a good way to meld one point to another it's frowned upon in many forms of writing. It's a hard sell, considering I too use/have used these as a tool but alas...

Cosmic Putrefaction's Gabriele Gramaglia makes burly death metal in the VEIN of Blood Incantation

Bold, hyperbolic statement, but more importantly - you couldn't even add a full stop to this?

This is pretty cringe. From a readers perspective; you've just assumed ALL your readers have liked that album. It may or not be so. Try to dabble in facts, or soften your language to account for those who didn't.

Try: While most of metal's fans found Blood Incantation's 2019 piece exceptional (an opinion made substantial by a quick look at various end of year lists).

Remove the bits about "your mum liked this". Yuck.

REMOVE. "Because I am a professional" REMOVE. Not trying to be mean, but you're on a site that has some Metacritic sway (staff writers) and most professional writers do not need to specify what they're doing. Develop your writing enough and you may be considered professional enough - whether that's amongst peers within the site or the aforementioned Metacritic that remains to be seen.

And to be fair the bands are not really all that similar.

Conjunction again. However, we should talk about media context. This comes back to sweeping hyperbolic phrasings for example. Even though your opinion says these bands are/are not similar, the wider consensus would argue they are not. If they are similar, you need to specify where and how. It's not good enough to just lay a statement and expect everyone to be on the same page. Provide examples, put it past doubt. I will however say, these acts are not similar. Just because they may be "metal" does not mean they share the same values. Again, examples are your best defence.

I am talking more about a general atmosphere.

Expand. This has to do with the points above. If something is similar it has value in bringing it into context. If it's not similar, why the actual fuck is it mentioned here? You must tie one to the other or what's the point?

This is some ugly, fast paced deathmetal

Death metal (two words). Did you type this in Word or Google Docs or something? Things like this would be underlined. Those lines means something's not right...

sounds like a mountain crushing a village full of orphans.

I don't think anyone's actually heard a mountain fall on a orphan village. Earthquakes and landslides aside, if you want some vague comparisons we should all do better.

Okay, I'm going to stop now. There's some ideas here and for a first I've read a few worse - but here's the kicker: If you really want to make something out of this (whether it's a hobby or a professional aspiration) you are in the right place.

Get a buddy or another user to go over your drafts, fine tune and polish. There's even a thread in the site's forum for exactly this sort of thing. It's an underused but invaluable feature to this site and I'd recommend all new writers to it.

This is very good so far. It's got a lot of dissonant flourishes you'd expect of a Voidhanger product but pulled off in a way that feels fairly unique to it.

Hey thank you for all the pointers! The reason I thought it might be a good idea to upload to Sputnik is that I really need the feedback and people know their stuff. also I can't really ask friends to proofread it because none of them speak english. I just want to get better at expressing myself when I talk about music. Maybe get someone to listen to something new.

Loved the review! It has personality, and I feel like I have an understanding of what the music is going to sound like. There’s some grammatical issues that have been pointed out already, but I’d like to say I am in favor of your funny comments (one man band genre, your mom liked Blood Incantation, you’re a professional). Nothing was lost by their inclusion, and they made the read more fun. They may not be SuPeR sErIoUs ReViEwEr comments but they’re less painful to read than the pretentious wank that I see in music reviews so frequently.
