Final proof that Jack White is the greatest musician in America today. What with Jimi Hendrix,Kurt Cobain and Jim Morrisson all six feet under White is easily Today's greatest thanks to his fantasic lyrics, charming yet quirky personility and excellant Guitar playing. So why the hell do XL (the White Stripes record label) put out a Dvd of one of the biggest bands in the world playing in a grimey English seaside town?.In a venue mostly used by OAP's for ballroom dancing?.Any one got an answer?.

Well i'l tell you.It was picked cause it will go down as one of the greatest gigs of the decade.Forget Live8 and Coldplay at Glastonbury this is one of the most passionate and fiery live show you'll get to witness.Over 25 songs,a mix of old and new there is never a dull moment. Some parts are a bit off in places but that's the same at any gig. It's the fact that the Stripes keep you on the edge of your seat for every song. That's what makes this Dvd so special and unique.Massive international hits like 'Seven Nation Army' go hand in hand with early blue rock tracks like 'Death Letter'.The Stripes make every single track sound urgent and needed. But the overall highlight is when The Stripes take their axe to Dolly Parton's 'Jolene' and turn the country pop hit into a pounding, screchy in your face classic. The chrous to 'Seven Nation Army' sees the whole venue turn into bright, frantic, loud, flashing mess.Plus also the fact that is shot beautifully using 'D-A Pennebaker'-style by Dick Carruthers. As used by the likes of Oasis and Led Zepplin makes this Dvd even more essential.

Next time the White Stripes return to Blackpool will be on November 10th.This time they'll have some blinding new songs to pick from. The Glam rock bitchfest of 'Blue Orchid'.The marimba led 'The Nurse'.Or maybe the Ragtime influence 'My Doorbell'.We'll have to wait and see.

Anyway, yesterday this reviewer got 2 full pages of negative comments after i said that English Indie rocker Pete Doherty (Babyshambles/Libertines) was the 21st century Kurt Cobain. But after watching 'Under Blackpool Lights' last night it became clear to me that whlist Doherty writes classic British pop songs and is a very important voice for the British music scene.Jack White is closest resembalence to Kurt Cobain in music today. He's a brillant songwriter, amazing guitarist,Hates doing interviews and he hates been famous.Oh yeah and he's got a strange but quite original dress sense like Cobain.

This Dvd may showcase one of the finest gig of the last 5 years. But it's also documents the raw energy and power of what a fine young rock band can do.The Stripes are a band how are capable of doing anything.May be it anthemic or loud and challenging. The Stripes spit on the competition from a very, very, very great height.

Overall Rating:
8/10

Yeah i belive so.Compared to all the Emo and Metal trash they have on the radio. He can play Guitar,Bass,Drums,Piano,Marimba and i think the Violin too.You can't really say that about the Dashboard Confessinal frontman can you. This Message Edited On 08.12.05

Why don't you just stop comparing people to Kurt Cobain. It's bad enough that I have to read a review that rambles on about nothing, while there is only one paragraph actaully discussing the music.

For the love of God!!!.Something Vague please get your head out of your arse all because your in the Top 15.I was actually correcting myself cause of all the bad comments i got yesterday about 'Babyshambles' and watching 'Blackpool lights' last night quite inspired me to make up with my band and i also saw a very rare talent on stage doing his job to a fantasic effect.2 people on here thought it was a good review apart from you.Sorry about 'only one paragraph actaully discussing the music' but it was quite rushed cause i had to go and see my sick granmother in hospital. So thanks for everything bitch.

OK...first of all, quite a nice review. Secondly, I'd like people to start calming down when using this site. I appreciate people taking the time to review CDs here (seriously), but the purpose of the comments section is to be constructive. Not to flame people. This goes for everyone. I'm not referring to anyone specific either.

Senor Whippy-I posted something like this in your review for The Rakes, but if you do a review in a rush, you might want to consider whether you want it posted immediately. You can just save it in Word or something, and post it later...no hurry, you know? That would just be a good way of cutting down on needless arguments in the comment section. And I sincerely hope your grandmother's OK as well. This Message Edited On 08.12.05

I kind of agree with Senor Whippy. It seems that most people in the top 15 think that their oppinions are better than everyone elses. It also seems that they sometimes will comment on a cd review just to bash the reviewer and tell him how his or her tastes suck.

Really? Prove it.

Oh, it's called an opinion. I didn't bash his review. Is there anything wrong with not liking someone's review? Or are you just looking for an excuse to blame the Top 15 for everything on the site.

Honestly, I don't think I've ever told anyone that their tastes suck, unless it was in a joking manner. So stop going around criticizing the Top 15, and actually be a productive member of Sputnikmusic.

I argee with both of you (Kdig and Something Vague) but some people in the top 15 use their postition to make sure that the sites runs smoothly and others use their postition to mock those who are lower than them.Plus Something Vague you have never once gave me a positive comment.Other top 15 users have corrected me on my mistake or have put their opinons across without bashing the reviewer's musical taste.

I'm not criticizing all of the Top 15, im just saying that some of the Top 15 are pretty harsh on others.

For instance in Senor Whippy's review of Open Season by British Sea Power Scott Herren's first comment is "This review sucked."

Can't remember Iai.I will take criticism but not stupid comments like ''your review sucked and the band sucked Whippy dude'' or people just quoteing what i've said without giving a reason for doing so.

I have to agree with the top 15 guys on this the whole point of a review is to give us an in depth review of the material, not one short very poorly detailed paragraph and then two paragraphs explaining how Jack White is the 21st century Kurt Cobain. If i wanted to discuss Kurt Cobain I would do it in a Kurt Cobain forum, not a White Stripes cd review.

IMO; this is the last descent live performance from the Stripes, it showcases all of their descent material from their previous four albums, and they are in excellent condition whilst playing it all.
after GBMS was released, I started dissliking them and this wsa confirmed when I saw the Glastonbury set. Their live appearance used to be very simple, just them, a few instruments, a few amps, and maybe the Peppermint Triple Tremolo thing. Now on the other hand, when they arrive onstage, the stage is littered with all sorts of instruments and crap painted on the back of the stage. They used to dress in very simple dress, anything red and white, but always just a simple top and trow combo, NOW, he wears that goddamn flowing jacket, and is it just me, or has Jacks' guitar playing gone severly downhill, because if you watch for instance, the solo on Jack The Ripper on the Blackpool Lights DVD, and then watch Jack STRUGGLING through Blue Orchid in the Glasto set, you can see that he has become quite sucky.

And yes, his new tone makes me crave blood.... his blood.
