Every so often, a band comes along that make you wonder "why the hell aren't these guys huge?!" They instantly click with you, connecting with you on a very personal level. They make you think, wonder, feel, happy, sad or whatever emotion or state of mind you wish to describe. Ladies and gentlemen of Sputnik, Mundanus Imperium is one of those bands. A long disbanded Symphonic Black Metal outlet (with their second and last effort being a Power Metal record) Mundanus Imperium wish to take you on a journey to the darkest reaches of the cosmos through this EP.
The first of the three songs 'Ode to the Night Sky' starts out straight forward enough. A catchy tremolo picked riff with some mid paced drumming usher you up before dying down for the vocals and drums, picking up speed again with the addition of the keyboards. It paints a perfect picture of what the rest of the EP will throw your way. Sorrowful, epic keyboards, catchy guitar lines, incomprehensible vocals and mid - fast paced drumming.
Every instument is crystal clear, with none over powering the other. You can hear everything perfectly which really helps with the atmosphere. Speaking of atmosphere, MI nail it, thanks to its superb production. But great production would be nothing without a decent instrumental performance, so its a good thing MI know what they're doing when its comes to creating both incredible music and atmosphere.
With only 3 songs coming in at 15 minutes, the EP is over way to soon. But the lasting impact it can have is more than enough. if you're looking for music in which loniless and longing are the driving emotions, look no further. An epic, majestic and lonely journey through the darkest regions of the cosmos.
